Riding Engagements For Pahiatua

AWAPUNI HORSES GALLOP NEXT

THE RAILS.

The following riding engagements for. Awapuni horsemen who will sport silk, at.: Pahiatua next week are as under:—• V

W. J. Broughton: Battle Pomp, ■Diingarvan, 'Miss Hushabye, Mirth and fcotou. - S. Anderson: Eka Tere, Royal Record, True Shaft, Helen Pord and Red Rufus.

W. E. Pine: Solaria. C. Thomson: Muggins and Taumau • Heavy Wind for Yesterday’s • Track Work.

The weather was fine though overcast for track work at Awapuni yesterday morning, but there was a very heavy wind which made things uncomfortable for track-watchers and the horses. The plough was in good order but very dusty and a number of. horses were given pace work on it. The , course proper was available for the gallops and for the first time for some months the horses were permitted to gallop on the rails.

Among the first to be sent along against the watch were True Shaft (L. H. Jones) and Discoursivo:(W. E.,Pine) and True Shaft, who 'hopped away at the seven furlongs,.picked.up.Discoursivo at the five. True Shaft had little pace on for the. first two furlongs, and when Discoursivo joined, him Discoursive, beginning very well, led the way to the straight, where Discoursivo- went on solidly to complete ,-tho five in 1.4 3-5, doing it well all the .way. What promised to be an interesting gallop was that in which Dungarvan (W.'J. Broughton), Greek Shepherd (Story) and Round Score (S. Anderson) were associated, but unfortunately for those not directly concerned Round Score was the only one that had not been fitted with four-legged brakes. The distance was seven furlongs and it was ieft to Round Scoro to make the 'pace from the jump out.' Against the wind Round Score was clocked to run the first two furlongs in 26 and four in 53 2-5.' Round ' Score ' was several lengths to the good running into . the straight, and’he finished very smoothly to complete the full distance in 1.32 1-5, All through Greek' Shepherd and Dungarvan were together and they were never under pressure.' The spell at 'Awapuni docs not appear to be .doing Greek Shepherd any harm for he looks even better than he did before the rui niiig of the iVwapuni Cup. Mirth, Mr. N. Blackmore’s Laughing Prince—Manda > filly scampered over three furlongs \. .th W. J.. Broughton in the saddle-and'she moved very sweetly. Mirth appears to be improving all the time, and her bid for victory in the Stonyhurst Juvenile Handicap last Saturday suggests that better things can bo expected of her in the very near future. In Saturday’s race she was leading at the home turn but, with a tendency to hang out, her jockey checked her and Candico, Black Friar and Moquettc beat her into the straight. Mirth lost a good deal of ground but she finished on into fourth place.

Martial Lady, whose form has been disappointing since last month, sprinted two furlongs in 25 1-5, Anderson being in the saddle.

Bodylino (W. E. Pine) was to have galloped half a mile with. Golden Enterprise (W. J. Broughton) but the latter did not get warmed up to it and Bodyline had to go away on his own, the little fellow galloping smoothly to cut tho distance out in 49 1.5.

Silver Wings, who has been here since the Manawatu meeting, was given pace work on the plough. Tail Light (G. Tattersall), Park Acre (S. Anderson) and Princess Ruth (L. H. Jones) were associated over half a mile and Tail Light held a slight advantage over Park Acre at the post after requiring 51 sees, for the distance. Princess Euth was several lengths back. Manawatu (Rae) with a companion, sprinted three furlongs in 37 secs. Muggins received a knock during the running of the Adderstone Handicap at Manawatu, and he was pottered about yesterday morning.

One of the last to arrive for work was the Gisborne-trained Lordly Knight. Lordly Knight looks well after his recent racing and it is suggested that his Easter racing will be done in the north.

Solaria is another visiting horse. He has been entered for Pahiatua, but his trainer was in two minds yesterday morning as to whether he would start at Pahiatua. Tho acceptances this evening, however, should serve as an indication. Solaria has had plenty of racing recently and his owner, who states that Solaria has been kicked on no less than four occasions, rather favours the walk-in start.

Dawning Light, who has been on the easy list for some time, was out on the tracks yesterday morning. She looks well. O’CONNOR’S TWO JUMPERS According to a South Island report, R. Dcale has been retained to ride Rasouli during the jumping season, as D. O’Connor is required for Royal Limond. - ■ A Christchurch writer states that the two horses will be bracketed if they meet in a race, but there is no provision in tho Rules of Racing for such a proceeding. The rules state that a jockey-trainer who has two horses in a race shall not ride either unless they are bracketed, but coupling is provided for only in the case of horses in tho same ownership or when a joint interest is involved, or when the number of starters is greater than the capacity of the totalisator dial.
