Nash) expressed pleasure at the number participating, lu Wellington very large numbers of entries were received for the tournament, and it must be a source of pleasure to those playing to-day to see bowlers who had advanced in years taking part in a- tournament of their own. In the veterans’ games, the speaker jocularly remarked, there would probably not be much driving. That was a source of annoyance to the veteran?, but they would have the opportunity in the tournament of playing bowls as the game used to be played. (Laughter.) There were many present who had played bowls in the Manawatu centre’s district for a long period of years. In particular, Mr Nash mentioned Mr C. Nicholson, whom he was pleased to see. Mr Nicholson used to return by train to Woodville each day. In one game, at the close of the day, Mr Nicholson had decided to finish the play rather thar catch the train, and the match had been brought to a conclusion with the assistance of matches and candles. Then Mr Nicholson had walked all the way to "Woodville. That showed the degree of enthusiasm the bowlers of those days had for the game. Mr Nash said he hoped that most enjoyable play would be experienced and in conclusion said that so long as the veterans took an active interest in the tournament it would be held annually. Three cheers were then given lor the veterans by other bowlers present. Replying, Mr J. Bartholomew thanked Mr Nash for his welcome and expressed the conviction that most enjoyable play would be seen. Three cheers were given by the veterans for the other bowlers. Piper E. H.
