THE NEW MAKE-UP

“PEACHES AND CREAM” As soon as the season’s secrets of the great dressmakers are out the leading beauty specialists come into the limelight with new make-up. Having been specially planned to tone with the newest colours it forms an inseparable part of the outfit. There is to be nothing flamboyant or bizarre about women’s appearance this season. Make-up is to be light and natural and, for all indoor occasions, peaches-and-cream is the idea at which to aim.

For out-of-doors, with the dashing military clothes that are in vogue, something more vivid is required. A deeper shade of powder is used and poppy rouge and lipstick replace rose-leaf red. Terra-cotta is a new shade of rouge and lipstick which a wellknown beauty specialist is showing. It is becoming to most types of colouring, and has been specially planned to tone with the rich Renaissance tints.

Perhaps the most interesting feature of the new make-up is the powder foundation. Hitherto most women have used a colourless foundation cream. Now the beauty specialists have taken a tip from Hollywood’s make-up experts and are realising that to get the “smooth as monumental alabaster” effect a rather heavy, tinted cream must be used. To find the most flattering tint, a few experiments will be necessary, some voting for a fleshcoloured base, others preferring pale green. At this time of year, however, smart women are using a shade known as “New Tan,” a warm colour which gives a delightfully healthy glow to the skin.

In order to wear the halo hats and the new hair-dressing styles successfully, the eyes must be emphasised with the clever use of shadow. Here again it is necessary to find the most becoming tint, the best effect being obtained by the blending of two or more colours.

For evening iridiscent shadows are used and starlight and silver azure are two new shades which are immensely becoming. Those who find eye shadow too exotie for, their taste should apply a trace of herbal oil or vaseline to the lids. This will give them a fashionable gleam and make the eyes look moist and youthful. Lastly, the brows must be shaped and perfectly groomed and the lashes carefully accentuated. The dry and furry look must be avoided and coloured lash creams are being used increasingly. If mascara is preferred, the waterproof variety should be used and, after application, the lashes should be touched with a camel-hair brush dipped in. glycerine. ' ! ■

Citrus Peel. Save the skins from fresh thickskinned citrus fruits. Grape-fruit, orange and lemon peels can be preserved together, but the flavours remain quite distinct. Cut fruit in halves and scoop out the centres thoroughly. When sufficient skins have been saved throw them into a dish of brine made by adding one dessertspoon of salt to each pint of water. Leave peel to soak for 3 or 4 days, then remove and rinse thoroughly in clean water. Put peel unto preserving pan, cover with clean water and boil till soft (about 2 hours). Remove peel and add 1 cup sugar to each cup of liquid left in the pan. Boil up, return peel to the pan and boil till the syrup has almost gone, taking care it does not burn. Remove peel, drain, sprinkle with castor sugar and dry in the sun or in a slow oven.' Finely-cut and mixed, this peel is equal in flavour and appearance to the bought product. Plum Sauce.

One cupful each of sugar, plum syrup and water, one tablespoonful each of flour and butter. Cook the ingredients together for a minute, and pour over plum rolls before baking.
