From Our Own Correspondent. School Committee.. - The monthly meeting ,of the Ashhurst . School committee 'was presided over bj the chairman, Mr F. Dunstail, others present being Messrs Davis, secretary Drummond, Kerrigan, Murphy and Wl.* , kin. ; A working bee .was held last week, to' make several repairs about the grounds. Messrs Wilkin, ; Dunstail and Davis were appointed a . deputation to wait on the stationmaster requesting ths ‘ department, when compiling time-tables for rail cars, to consider the claims o( the secondary school children-of this district.. At present-the train service is very inconvenient for secondary school children and if the position were explained in the propel - quarter before the service commenced, it was thought possible that the department may be able to meet thb wishes of the parents. The secretary reported on the picnic and.the committee expressed everybody's appreciation of the day’s outipg. Thanks are due to all who so willingly helped to make the such a success, and especially those who made donations of prizes, etc. Workmen of the Education Board have been busily engaged repairing the shelter shed whicli was damaged during the gale of February 2. During a general discussion the committee expressed'its thanks for the assistance and co-operation always so willingly given by the Oroua County Council. Minor Gale, During last Wednesday a fairly heavy gale from a westerly direction was experienced locally, several trees being uprooted and power lines twisted or broken One line broke ori the Napier road about II miles on tho Palmerston North side of Ashhurst, and if it had not been for a resident nearby warning travellers on the road an accident might have occurred. As it was, a drover had his leading dog destroyed. The live wire came in contact with the dog througli the wind swinging it about.: ■ A motorist took word into the authorities and the power was switched off, and a gang sent out to effect repairs. Methodist Church. Last Wednesday evening Rev. C. Foston gave a lecture on England in the eighteenth century and tne influence of . the Wesley revival. At the conclusion of the evening a collection was taken to assist the jubilee funds. Personal and General. Mr G. Devonport has returned home after spending a holiday in Masterton.and Wellington; Miss Crowtcher, of Ashburton, is tne guest of Miss E. Thorne. A mild outbreak of chicken pox is being experienced locally. Women's Institute. The March meeting of the Ashhurst Women's Institute was held last week when the president, Mrs J. Flowers, presided over a splendid attendance of members. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Woodroofe (secretary), Hyndman, Edmond and Misses M. Youle and M. Tremewan. Resignations were received from Miss Heron and Mrs G. Cook who-have left the district. Nominations were received for the ensuing year, one senior and five juniors. As this was the annual meeting of the Institute, ths report was read as also was the balance sheet which showed that there was a good credit balance. Members expressed satisfaction at the position. Mrs J. Flowers was re-elected president for her third term. Mrs A. Currie in congratulating Mrs Flowers, made mention of the patience and efficiency that the president had displayed in carrying out her duties. Mrs Paton heartily endorsed Mrs Currie’s remarks. The new, committee was elected as follows: Mesdames Amon, Bristow, Brewer, currie, Evans, Flowers, McLaughlin, Misses Wilkin, Harris and Crammer. Miss. Grant,, who was a guest of the afternoon, gave a veryinteresting talk on tlie Women’s.lnstitute movements, which was apprgciated by all present. Mrs Flowers thanked Miss Grant, on behalf of memoers. An interesting letter from a member of an English Institute was read during the afternoon. Winners of the points prizes during the past y-ear were as rotiow: Mrs A. Currie, 33 points; Mrs Hynumun, 22 points; Mrs Havill third. Juniors: Miss V. Muldrock and Miss A. Dobson, equal, 33 points; Miss M. Youle third. The lucky cup holder durbig the afternoon tea session proved to be Mrs J. McDoneil. Hostesses for tne next meeting, to be hold in April, will be Mesdames Gaisford, Harper, Jepson and McDoneil. The competition for both senior and juniors is to be any article made from one yard of britway. Defence Rifle Club. Last Saturday the open championship of the Ashhurst Defence Rifle Club was fired on the local range. There was a disappointing attendance of visitors, and the number of competitors was lower than in previous years. Conditions were seven shots at each of 300, 500 and 600 .yards ranges. Weather conditions were very tricky for, though the afternoon was fine, a changing light and a strong rear fishtail wind made consistently good scores very near impossible. The winner, J. Searle, who takes the open championship rose bowl, was the only, one to master the conditions and his scores of 34, 32, 32 —98' out oi a possible 103, was a very fine performance, and is the highest score yet registered over the SCO, 500 and 600 yards on the Ashhurst range. What must be credited as the best effort of the day. was that of Merv Paton. the club’s youngest member. This young shot secured second place and also won the trophv for B grade shots, his scores reading 2S, 33. 30—01. Last year’s champion, W. G. Romley, finished in third, place. in the first shoot for the club’s season handicap aggregate over 300 and 500 y-ards, three members secured the limit of 6.8 points, namely', M. Paton, J.
