Primary Schools Sports

PALMERSTON NORTH ACTIVITIES. The annual meeting of the Palmerston North Boys’ Primary Schools’ Sports Association was held recently. The annual report recorded that the year opened with the adoption of a new constitution and the subsequent election of a new executive under the new conditions. A full programme of the various sports was entered upon, the weather, however, causing some inconvenience and curtailment in some of the cricket competitions. Under the new rules the Pat Cunningham shield was awarded to Terrace End. Owing to the changing of the executive and the subsequent disorganisation 'of the Swimming Association, no junior swimming championships were held, owing to the lateness of the season, but these will be held this year. Winners of competitions were:— Football. —Seniors: Convent and Terrace End (equal); juniors: Terrace End A; midgets: Terrace End A. Cricket. —Seniors: Central; juniors: Central. Terrace End and Central are to be congratulated on their line performances. Prior to the quadrangular tournament, a series of games was played against Oroua, Feilding, Te Kawau and finally against Horowhenua, this latter game now becoming an annual fixture. The game this year resulted in a draw. Tho representative team travelled to .Masterton to take part in the annual quadrangular tournament, which resulted in a win for Wairarapa. Thanks have been extended to the Wairarapa Association for the hospitality shown both boys and their managers. Although Manawatu sent away a good team, they wero unfortunate in having their ranks depleted by sickness. No alteration is shown in the cricket account, but the football account, with a credit balanco of £ll 19s sd, shows an increase over last year’s credit balance of approximately £4. The subcommittee appointed to draw up the rules of the association has these ready for publication but is still waiting to hear whether the Women Teachers’ Association is co-ordinating with the men in this respect. It was with deep Tegret that the executive extended its sympathy to Mr Haydon and his family during their recent sad bereavement. To the Rugby Union, the Referees’ Association, and to all those who have given so much of their time and assistance to the furtherance of boys’ sport in the Manawatu and to those who so willingly assisted with the billeting of visiting boys during the trial games, the executive tenders its thanks. In addition, tho executive wishes to thank all sports masters who have given so much time towards coaching their boys. It is only with such co-operation and keenness that successful competitions can be arranged. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr McEwan; chairman, Mr K. B. Dawkins; secretarytreasurer, Mr T. E. Douds; delegate to Cricket Council, Mr Warwick; delegate to Rugby Union, Mr Berry; auditor, Mr Haydon; executive, Messrs Connor, Pryor, Warwick, Haydon, Dawkins, Browne and Merritt; Pat Cunningham shield committee, Messrs Jackson, Dawkins and Douds.
