Level Crossing Accident
AUCKLAND, March 17. Injury probably involving the amputation of a foot was sustained by a lorry driver, John Watts, in a levelcrossing accident at Avondale to-day. Tko lorry was being driven slowly from brickworks adjacent to the railway at 10.50 a.m., and an eyo-witness said it seemed impossible that the injured man could have seen the train a’ppro.aching. The lorry had travelled at less than walking pace between the brickworks gate and the second sej; of
rails about fifteen yards away. Tho impact was sufficient to force the heavy vehicle to turn a complete circle. The front portion of the engine and cab was completely wrecked. Watts, with his foot practically severed, was taken to hospital in an ambulance. No one else was injured.
