Bankers Celebrate . St. Patrick's Day

TENNIS TOURNAMENT AT LINTON STREET HUME AND BOYD WIN DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIP Bankers, drawn from a very wide area, celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with a tennis tournament on tho Linton street courts, and a most enjoyable day was spent. The principal event was a doubles championship and this was won by Hume and Boyd, the former being from Palmerston North aud the latter from Shannon. The runnersup were Darrow (W’anganui) and Aplin (Mangaweka), who were outed in a three-set final in which the tennis was of a very high standard. The other event was a consolation handicap, and this was won by Barker and Gardner, of Palmerston North, with Reed and Failover, another Palmerston North pair, as rnnners-up.

At the conclusion of the tournament Mr H. C. Morgan, accountant at the Palmerston North branch of the Bank of New Zealand, presented the prizes, and in doing so he made feeling reference to the generous action of the Palmerston North Lawn Tennis Club in placing their excellent courts at the disposal of the bankers. Mr Morgan also asked for an expression of opinion as to the advisability of making the tournament an annual affair. To this there was a unanimous vote for the annual fixture, and it is to be held in Palmerston North. The tournament secretary was Mr Bull and his work left little if anything to be desired. Darrow (W’anganui) and Aplin (Wanganui) beat Ewing (W’oodville) and Beale (P.N.), 9—6. Gavin (P.N.) and Clayton (P.N.) beat Alexander (Mangaweka) and Failover (P.N.), 9 —l. Mansell (Bulls) and McDonald (P.N.) beat Windley (W’anganui) and Styche (P.N.), 9—5. Ilume (P.N.) and Boyd (Shannon) beat Barker (P.N.) and Murray (P.N.), 9—7. McCarthy (Shannon) and Thomson (Pahiatua) beat Plimmer (P.N.) and Robertson (Woodville). Bull'(P.N.) and Hill (P.N.) beat Alexander and Reed (P.N.), 9 —6. Second Round. Darrow and Aplin beat White and Grummitt, 9 —6; Mansell and McDonald beat Gavin and Clayton 9 —l; Hume and Boyd beat McCarthy and Thomson, 9—7; Hill' and Bull a bye. Semi-finals. Darrow and Aplin beat Mansell and McDonald, 9—3; Hume and Boyd beat Hill and Bull, 9—3. Final. (Best of 3 Sets.) Hume and Boyd beat Darrow and Aplin, 4 —6, 6—4, 6—4. Consolation Event. First Tound: Small and Styche beat Windley and Murray, 9 —6; Plimmer and Beale beat Ewing and Robertson, 9—S; Barker and Gardner a bye; Reed and Failover a bye.
