The Minister explained that he hoped to get a good deal of relief in the matter of expenditure wheu the Government’s public works policy was put into operation. “Quite a number at present a charge on the Unemployment Fund will be transferred to public works, and will thus case the burden on the fund considerably,” said Mr. Armstrong. Commenting on the question of sustenance payments, the Minister stated that there would always bo a certain expenditure necessary in this direction. Recent figures indicated a drop in the number in receipt of sustenance, and he expected that there would be a further decrease in the near future.

“I hope to announce a further improvement in the rates of sustenance,” he added, “but not before the session starts.”
