Convent School Picnic

Favoured with, ideal weather the pupils of the Convent School held their annual picnic at the Esplanade yesterday. Approximately 400 children and their parents travelled by various means of transport to bo present at the gathering. Quite a number of children took advantage of the free buses provided by the committee and gathered at the Convent School to be transported to the picnic ground. The arrangements for the sports took longer than was originally anticipated, and it was not until after lunch that the programme was commenced, but the sub-committee got through expeditiously and the races were concluded in the early afternoon. The committee had a very busy day distributing sweets, ice cream and soft drinks. This work was in the hands of the ladies' committee, which comprised Mesdames Christenson, Jervis, Lyons, Creed, Summers, Power and Greening.

At the conclusion of the picnic the children were again conveyed by buses to the Square. The picnic was successful one and tho children thoroughly enjoyed their day in the sunshine.

Advantage was taken during the week-end of the presence of Mr W. Brown, captain of the Fitzroy lifesaving team, (New Plymouth) by a number of Levin surfing enthusiasts to obtain further knowledge upon lifesaving methods, and for this purpose the reel recently provided at Waitarere Beach was brought into use for practice purposes. Several of the members having had some experience in this direction before, the team of amateurs, under Mr Brown’s direction, made good progress, while a team of young ladies who essayed the operation of the apparatus, also experienced some considerable success in their practice attempts.
