Amateur Athletics and Cycling

The weekly meeting was held last evening at the Sportsground before a large crowd of spectators, the biggest that has attended' this season. They were not disappointed in the events held, all of the finishes being very close. The cycling races drew the biggest fields so far this year, and although the runners were few, the races proved very exciting and the finishes close. There are still a lot of cyclists and runners not competing and by their attendance’in the future they will bo doing the sport good in this city, so it is hoped tho fields will be larger at the meetings yet to be held this season. The results of last evening were as follow :

One lap cycling.—First heat: Evan (05) 1, Gibson (05; 2, Attwcll (05) 3; time, 41 2-ssec. Second heat: Sheridan (65) 1, Prouse (65) 2, White (05) 3; time, 41 3-ssec. Final: Sheridan 1, Gibson 2, Prouse 3; time, 41 4-ssec. 75 yards sprint: Cocker (31) 1, Cutler (9) 2, Gillespie (01) 3; time, 7 3-5 sec.

One mile cycle: Lawrence (ser) 1, Hayes (110) 2, Peters (145) 3; time, 2min. 16sec.

220 yards handicap: Cocker (14) 1, Cutler (25) 2, Newlands (20) 3; time, 22sec.

Two mile cycle: Peters (255) 1, Sheridan (300) 2, Sheerin (220) 3; time, 4min. 39sec.

In the challenge race Peters won by default from Dixon, and has been challenged by Hayes over a distance of two laps next week.
