Association had established a first' innings lead of 20 runs, but when High School at their second appearance were dismissed for 86, and there remained 70 minutes for play, Y.M.C.A. weut after the funs requisite for a 4-pointer. These were secured with five wickets to spare. : On the opening day High School mado 128, and at stumps V.M.C.A. had five wickets down for 83 runs. The not out men on Saturday were Spelman (35) aud Murchison (32). They were not long together, for in the second over Spelman, with only one run added, lost his wicket when Cameron caught him off Anderson. He had made six fours. Murchison continued until he had a neat half-century, and was then run out, with seven fours and one sixer. Loudon, with 29 (5 fours), was the only other batsman to get well set, but when the innings closed the score was well ahead of High School’s, so that at least a three-pointer was assured. High School’s second innings was disastrous, the batsmen being mostly unable to withstand Spelman’s deliveries. Anderson was top scorer with 21. Spelman’s wonderful returns were produced off 18 overs, there . being one maiden. The innings closed at 4.45 p.in. for 86 runs. Y.M.C.A. required 67 runs for a major victory, but at first the position did not look hopeful, especially when three wickets were down for 13 runs. However, Murchison and Hatch got together and shook the bowling, so that frequent recourse to the boundary sent up the runs without difficulty. Y.M.C.A. Palmer (captain of the winning team), said that Chain Stores had batted on a “wholesale” basis in amassing their total, whereas Grocers had gone for smaller profits; in fact, several members had worked for nothing, making “blobs.”
