One of the oldest methods and the very latest in transport were brought into sharp contrast at the limaru airport when Union Airways liner Korimako visited the aerodrome. When weather conditions rendered it advisable for the pilots to return to Timaru from Hampden, they informed the ground staff at Timaru of their intention, and asked for a supply of petrol to be made ready. The aeroplane arrived and taxied up to the hangar, but the petrol which had been ordered from town, had not arrived. While they waited, the officers showed a number of visitors the modern equipment of the liner and obtained a telephonic weather report from T'aieri, their destination. Some time later the petrol arrived —in an express wagon of two horse-power, the generating power of which was not petrol. But a still more marked contrast was to be provided at a later stage in the air-liner’s visit. Just before the machine taxied away to a corner of the landing ground to get a good run for the take-off, a mechanic mounted on a motor cycle of modern design rounded up some stock which were grazing on the runway. The de luxe method of handling stock created a good deal of amusement among the crowd which gathered to inspect the aeroplane. SCHOOL CHILDREN’S EYESIGHT.
