Ohakea

From Our Own Correspondent. The annual meeting of the Ohakea Social Credit branch was held in the Ohakea Hall on Wednesday night. There was a good attendance. The annual re* port was adopted and mention was made inter alia of the strong numerical position of the branch and its rapid growth. During the year the branch while still an infant organisation was tnrown into the whirlpool of electioneering and members carried out their respective duties with energy and tact. Colonel Closey’s lecturing tour took place during the year and has borne much fruit. Regular meetings for study and discussion purposes have been well attended. The financial statement showed a good credit balance in spite of the branch commitments being heavy. Consideration was given to the financial policy proposed for 1936 and it was decided to support same. It was decided to meet on the first Wednesday each month and that if possible a study group be commenced. The election of officers resulted as follows: Vice-presi-dents, Messrs J. Capstiek and H. Redpath; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr D. Capstiek; committee, Messrs D. Koberstein, A. Hartley and H. Ellery; delegate to district council, Mr H. Ellery. It was decided to assist the Bulls branch with a donation. Women's Institute. Mrs Ben Erecklington presided over a good attendance at the first meeting of the year held on Tuesday afternoon In the hall. It was decided to hold the postponed picnic at Tangimoana beach on February 29, weather permitting. The date for the annual meeting was fixed for March 17, and arrangements made for holding a social evening on March 13, cards, dancing and items being suggested. A playette will be contributed by the drama circle. Mesdames Ben Frecklngton and A. V. Matthews were elected delegates to the council meeting at Palmerston North. The hall committee wrote thanking the Institute for the work done in the hall. The demonstration of picture making was given by Miss N. Capstiek while the other single members gave items which were much appreciated. Personal. Messrs D. Ellery, R. Simpson and L. Simpson paid a visit to Waitomo Caves with the week-end excursion. Messrs N. Ingram and K. Green are on a motor tour of Rotorua and North Auckland districts. Miss R. Wightman, of “Cliff Farm” Is holidaying at Waitarere with her sister, Mrs H. Meads. Mr R. Ryder, of Petone, who has been the guest of Mrs F. Simpson, has left on a motor tour. Mr and Mrs B. J. Palmer and friends have returned from their holidays spent on a motor tour of the Rotorua and Auckland districts. Particularly wet weather has been experienced during the past few days, heavy rain showers being accompanied by thunder. Pastures everywhere are waterlogged and a cessation of these conditions is hoped for. Tuesday was very sultry, the temperature soaring to SO degrees in the early afternoon.
