Carnival Function at Cheltenham
The Cheltenham Women’s Institute sv~ercd a severe disappointment on Wedn'-day when heavy rain fell and necessitated the postponement of the garden party that was to have taken at Mrs. E. E. Short’s home for Miss Joan Billman, the W.I. queen in the Cheltenham School jubilee carnival. However, the members undaunted by the weather speedily set about making preparations for a function in the nature of a bazaar to be held at t Cheltenham hall. Stalls were soon erected and were set out with a variety of saleable goods, games were arranged for the amusement of patrons, and in fact everything was done to ensure the afternoon’s success. The stall holders had not long to wait for customers and their merchandise sold readily to housewives eager to make good bargains, whilst the games also attracted the usual crowd out for an afternoon’s fun. So that despite the very adverse weather conditions all went well and the function was really a most e joyable one besides being a financial success.
The still holders were:—Produce, Mesdames F. G. Billman and H. Brooker; arts and crafts, Mrs. J. E. Barltrop and Misses M. Petrie and E. Booth; sweets and cakes, Mrs. G. J. Fitzpatrick; games, Mrs. F. Cameron and Misses J. Billman, C. Androws and H. Hocken.
A lavish afternoon tea was provided by the W.I. members and those in charge were Mesdames W. D. Shepherd, F. Shepherd and H. Branch. A competition for a beautiful satin cushion presented by Mesdames Barltrop and Billman was won by Mrs. E. E. Short. The public were naturally very disappointed at the garden party having to bo postponed as an afternoon, in the pretty grounds of Mrs. Short’s home had been pleasurably anticipated. However, the W.I. intend trying their luck again in the middle of March when it is hoped they will meet with all the success they deserve.
