Eggs Smuggled by Hens
Eight German farmers of Rothenbach, on tho Dutch frontier, have been sentenced to five months’ imprisonment for making smugglers of their hens (writes tho Berlin correspondent of The Times). Tho farmers, whoso land lay on both sides of the frontier, conceived the idea of feeding their hens in Holland, where fodder is cheaper than in Germany, and then driving them over tho frontier to lay their eggs in Germany, where eggs are dearer than in Holland. This ingenious means of making the best of both countries was at last discovered by tho Customs authorities, but not before 2,000,000 eggs, according to the authorities’ estimate, had been carried into Germany without payment of import duty.
