The Freezing Season
A year ago lamb lrad dropped Id per lb.; fat ewes were making around 15s and wethers to 245. Freezing beef was worth 22s 100 lbs. The schedule rates for lamb, remain unaltered at 8d for 35’s and so forth. Ewes and wethers are being bought by freezing operators at per head, good ewes being worth 15s and over, wethers 255. Beef is in a boom just now. For the present chillers are making 32s Gd 100 lbs., freezing beef 275. Few cattle arc coming forward, however, as farmers want every hoof to keep the feed down. One buyer recently drafted a line of cattle. The rain that followed caused the owner to ring up and say that he wanted the cattle left on the farm, he would not let them go as they were so needed. Cattle generally are doing well this season. Lambs are not doing at all well; they want dry feed and sunshine. Worms are reported to be very bad amongst lambs. The rank feed, continuous dampness and lack of sunshine are all against weaned lambs. Eczema has not been troublesome this season; scald has been somewhat serious in some parts. A couple of dry, sunny months are badly needed. It is defubtful if we will get them.
