Rangiotu

Prom Our Own Correspondent. School Committee. The monthly meeting of the Rangiotu School committee was held on Monday evening. Mr J. Shaw presided, and mere were also present Messrs Carkeek, Duncan, D. G. Moore, E. Russell (secretary) and Miss Thompson (headmistress). The roll Indicated an increase of five pupils, last year’s closing figures being 60, six of that number having left. Since the opening of the school after the summer vacation, the attendance had been somewhat low owing to the prevalence of whooping cough in the district. The secretary, Mr Russell, reported that the sum of £1 4s -id was collected at the school’s breaking-up ceremony last December for the children’s health camp at Wanganui. Though the school building did not suffer any material damage from the storm, a number of pine rrees in the grounds were blown down, causing a good deal of damage to the fences, etc., and requiring urgent attention. It was resolved to write to the board for assistance in the matter of clearing the trees and general repairs. After considerable discussion it was decided to hold the school picnic at Foxton beach on March 6. Donations towards the picnic fund will be thankfully received. The committee considered that if the parents each contributed towards the cost or transport their efforts would be greatly assisted, and no doubt a pleasant and profitable day’s outing would result. The question of free transport for pupils attending secondary schools was discussed at length. The chairman stated that representatives cf various school committees in the district had met on two occasions last year, at and Foxton respectively, but without result. Quite a large number of pupils i from this district alone were attending j the secondary schools in the city, and the < cost of transport was a serious problem

to most parents. It was resolved to bring the matter before the notice of the member for the district, idr C. D. Hunter, at the earliest possible moment. Factory Pay-out. The Rangiotu Dairy Company and the Jlangawhata Dairy Company are each paying out lOd lb butterfat for the month of January.
