From Our Own Correspondent. Women's Institute Meeting.

The rain fell down in torrents but this did not prevent the keen members of the Opikl Women’s Institute attending the monthly meeting on Wednesday. Mrs G. J. Wilde was in the chair. An apology for absence was received from Miss M. Triggell, secretary, and Mrs V. Claridge took her place for the afternoon. The delegates appointed to represent Opiki W.I. at the Manawhenua group rally at Koputaroa on Eriday are Mrs V. Claridge and Mrs J. Mabey. The banner to be entered In. the competition was on display, and a letter of appreciation is to be sent to Miss M. Cooper for her services. Notice was received of the annual council meeting of the North Wellington federation to be held in Palmerston North in April. Delegates will be appointed at the March meeting. The resignation of Mrs O. Tippler was received \ and arrangements made to make her a presentation. The following members were proposed to stand for the new committee: Miss M. Alve, Mrs J. D. Aitchison, Mrs 15. Bond, Mrs V. Claridge, Miss C. Cooksley, Mrs W. Irwin, Mrs W. Jackson, Mrs H. Kars, Mrs C. Marriott, Mrs B. Norman, Mrs J. Percy, Miss J. Sou thee, Miss M. Triggell. Mrs G. J. Wilde, Mrs W. White, Mrs B. T. Webb, and Mrs G. Yule. One nomination, that of Mrs B. Norman, was received for the office of president. Mrs G. Wilde is not seeking re-election. A donation of books for the library was received from Mr B. Edmundson. During the social half hour, Rev. Mr Kenny of Shannon gave an enjoyable vignette of “country life in England to-day and yesterday.” In conclusion he made an appeal for the preservation of our beautiful native bush as a heritage for the genera 7 tions to come in New Zealand, in proposing a vote of thanks to the speaker, Mrs Wilde mentioned that she would like ail members to plant as many trees as possible in the future. Mrs G. Yule and Mrs A. Alve sang a vocal duet most pleasingly and their fellow members would like to hear more of them at later meetings. The competition for the best three varieties of bottled fruit was judged by popular vote and resulted: Mrs V. Claridge 1, Mrs W, Irwin 2, Mrs W. White 3; 7 entries. The competition for the best worked buttonhole was judged by Mrs Inkpen of Palmerston North. Mrs V. Claridge 1, Mrs E. Henderson 2, Miss E. Carson 3. Miss D. Irwin special. The competition for guessing the identity ot members when children, provided much interest, and this was won by Mrs J. A. Cooksley and Miss V. Henderson. The annual meeting of the W.I. is to bo held in March when there will be an election for officers. Items will be contributed by the outgoing committee. Hostesses for this occasion will be Mrs E. Bond, Mrs V. Claridge, Mrs W. Jackson and Mrs C. Jensen. N to Z inclusive will bring afternoon tea. Personal. Mr Webb senr. of Kiritaki, Dannevirke, was a recent visitor to the district. Miss Vera Sadd of Carnarvon, spent the week-end as the guest of Mr and Mrs V. Claridge. Mrs Inkpen, of Palmerston North, is staying with Mr and Mrs G. Yule, Makerua road. The members of tho Ladies’ Sports Club and their friends held an enjoyable picnic at Eoxton beach over the weekend. , , Mrs W. Irwin has generously donated some prize bulbs to tho Women’s Institute There will be a special class for the blooms at the spring flower show, so members are requested to call on Mis Irwin immediately if they have not received their bulbs. . The electric power was again olt on Tuesday evening and a number of unfortunate farmers had to finish milking and do the separating by hand. They would not have been in this predicament only with every sign of rain, many hastened to save the remaining few tons of hay which had been drying out in tho paddocks since the storm. . . Mrs Graham Smith, with Sylvia and Gregor intend visiting relations in Masterton early next week. and Mrs Hubbard, of Masterton, were recent visitors to the district.
