AMERICA’S PECULIAR GAME 75 900 INJURED IN THREE ’ MONTHS. and thirty killed. (By Air Mail.) NEW YORK, Jan. 18. Thirty footballers have been killed, and 75,900 injured, in the first three months of the U.S. football season ■writes the New York correspondent of the London Sunday Chronicle. _ This is the grim story told in-an official return just issued here on the 'toll of the playing fields. Calculations based on statistics show an alarming rise in the number of casualties this year. Violent Game. During the five years ending in 1935 the total number killed on the football field was 147. In 1934 deaths numbered 2d. The present season’s death roll works out at 90.3 per 1000 players in the high schools and 150 per 1000 players m the colleges. , , . A close investigation ha 9 aJso . revcaled that 60 per cent, of the fatalities on the football field are due directly to the nature of the game.
