SALUTGRY FINE INFLICTED ON MOTORIST. HAWERA, Last Night. “This is an outstanding case of callous gambling with the life and death of the public in approaching a corner at such a speed,” said Mr Woodward, S.M., at the .Hawera court to-dav when inflicting a line of £2O. in a charge of negligent driving against Barclay Harrington, aged 19. “Defendant said his speed was 30 miles per hour but it was probably twice that and he will be prohibited from obtaining a license for two years,” added the Magistrate. “I had intended to inflict imprisonment but for the excellent character of defendant given by the police.” The charges arose as a result of an accident at Hawera on December 12 when a car driven by Harrington collided with a cyclist, the latter receiving a head injury and fractured jaw
