■ .C- ,» ■ ' From Ouf Owa Correspondent. School Committee. At the. first meeting of the school committee for the year Mr W. A. Salt presided. Others present were Messrs T. Conwell, F. G. Giles and W. Ward, while an apology was received from Mr J. M. Giles, Reference was made to the trees that were blown down by the recent hurricane as being dangerous to the children, and if was decided to have same removed. The teacher reported that the enrolment of pupils at the school opening was 32, which total included two new pupils. li'ollowing their usual custom tho committee decided to hold the annual picnic in one of the parks of Feilding, tho function to be held on Friday, February 28, also that subscription lists in aid of same bo circularised throughout the district. Old Pupils' Association. An enjoyable euchre and dance was promoted by the association on Wednesday night in the Awahuri Hall, when thero were present about -200 people. The card room was popular, while the dance patrons were treated to a programme of popular old-time and modern numbers and the committee is deserving of commendation on the manner in which hospitality was extended to the visitors. Mr J. M. Giles, president of the association, thanked the patrons for their assistance in popularising the old pupils’ functions, which were, he stated, the only means ol increasing the association’s funds. He also referred to the death of an old pupil, Mrs Crawford (nee Miss Kita Montgomerie), and as a mark of respect asked all to stand in silence. Novelties and card results were as follows: Lucky Gay Gordons, Miss Birch and Mr H. Cole; lucky spot, Miss fci. A. Florence and Mr J. Taylor; Monte Carlo, Mr and Mrs Trembath (Bulls); waltzing competition, Mrs C. Waka and Mr J. Merritt; ladies' euchre. Mrs T. Byer 1. Mrs F. Humphries 2; men’s euchre, Mr *i. Merritt 1, Mr YV. Ward 2. Supper was served. Twenty-first Birthday. A happy gathering assembled at the Awahuri Halt on Monday night to honour the twenty-first birthday of Mr Lawrence Taylor. The promoter of the function was Mr W. Taylor, a broher of the guest of honour, who with the aid of Mrs Humphries and Miss Humphries, left notihng to bo desired where hospitality was concerned. A popular string orchestra from Palmerston North supplied the _ music, and patrons were not slow in taking advantage of their popular renditions. That Mr Taylor is popular in the district was proven by the number of presents that were exhibited, and at a suitable juncture during the supper adjournment Mr Taylor thanked all for their gifts. Ho was required to light the candles on a beautiful birthday cake made by Mrs Humphries. When presemng tli© key to the guest of tho evening, Mr YV. A. Salt referred to the sterling qualities of Mr Taylor, as a footballer and a member of the Awahuri Miniature Bifle Club. The toast to Mr Taylor was proposed by his brother after which the guest was accorded musical honours. Other speeches were delivered by Mr J. M. Giles and also by Mr A. B. Baker, by whom Mr Taylor is employed. After supper dancingconsisting of modern and old-time numbers was carried on into the early hours of the morning when tho happy gathering terminated. Women’s Institute. At a recent meeting oc the local branch of tho YV.X., a resolution was carried that an annual social and dance evening be held in the Awahuri Hall on the first week of March. According to reports, the function is going to prove popular and should the committee responsible adopt the methods used on previous occasions, the success of the function is a foregone conclusion. Potato Crops. From appearances potato crops are showing evidence of being contaminated with blight and may not be worth digging up this season.
