HAWKE CUP CHALLENGE

Poverty Bay Make 98 MANAWATU FIVE DOWN FOR 65 The third Hawke Cup cricket match of the season was commenced at the Sportsground yesterday, Manawatu being opposed by Poverty Bay. Scheduled to commence at 10.30 a.m., the game was not started till two o’clock, heavy rain preventing play earlier.

Manawatu won tho toss and put the visitors in, dismissing them for 98. Tho home team went to the wickets shortly after five o’clock, and when stumps were drawn for the day had lost five wickets for 65 runs. Poor individual scores were tho rule, Boon, the Poverty Bay and former New Zealand representative, returning top figures with 32. Although fears were entertained that it would be treacherous, the wicket played well. The outiieid, however, was slow and a number of shots that ordinarily would have gone to the boundary pulled up short. Outstanding bowling figures were returned by N. Gallichan, the Manawatu slow left-hander, -who finished with seven wickets for 23 runs off 10 overs. Thirteen of theso runs were knocked off two overs.

With two exceptions Poverty Bay fielded its best eleven. Of the team selected to represent Manawatu, Waldin and Oliver weer unable to play, and their places were taken by Pollitt and M. A. Ongley. Tho umpires are Messrs F. W. Hubbard and D. Jones.

Lockett and Boon opened for Poverty' Bay, the bowling being entrusted to Murchison and Berquist. Runs came slowly, being confined to singles and twos. With tho score at 10, Lockett spooned up a simple catch to Gutler at short leg, the fieldsman making no error. The retiring batsman had been responsible for seven of the total. Fraser came out to the wickets and played cautiously. Boon hit the first four of the match off Murchison, who was replaced by Hcarscy with the total at 17. After taking two maidens, Fraser opened his account with a single off Hearsay. Half an hour's play was productive of only IS runs, six of the last seven overs being maidens. Murchison came on again, taking over from Berquist at the town end. Boon livened up the scoring with a couple of boundary strokes, and the total mounted to 30. Cutler replaced Hearsey and the change was immediately effective, the slow bowler’s third delivery shattering Fraser’s wicket.— 31-2-3. The retiring batsman was Poverty Bay’s top scorer against Manawatu last year, making (51 on that occasion.

Reeves was the newcomer. A single to Boon off Murchison brought his total to 20. At 38 Gallichau came on at the Esplanade end and sent down a maiden to Boon. Fifty was hoisted after 80 minutes’ play. Six to Reeves off an over by Gallichan saw him enter the twenties. Boon went with the score at 68, being caught by Cutler off Gallichan. The outgoing batsman had been at the wickets for 95 minutes and his score of 32 included three boundary strokes. Reeves aud Robertson were now as sociated at the wickets, but only one run had beeu added when Reeves got his leg iu front to Gallichan.—69-4-25. Three deliveries later Gallichau uprooted Robertson’s middle .stump, a change of pace completely beating the batsman. The newcomer had failed, to score. At this stage Gallichan had taken three for 15. Bennett, the visitors’ captain and a former Manawatu representative, came out to partner Dow and opened with a single off Berquist. With two more runs on the board Gallichan, making paco off the wicket, sprcadeagled Dow’s stumps. —72-6-2. Wells did not last long, being caught by J. Ongley at mid-on off Berquist after scoring a single.—7s-7-1. With no alteration to the score, Bennett was cleau-bowlcd by Gallichau, his contribution being three. Carroll was unlucky in stepping back on his wicket after making five.— 80-9-5. Blathwayt, the last man in, went for a merry knock, running into double figures with five scoring strokes. At 15 his career came to a stop when he hit Gallichan into the safe hands of McVicar. The innings closed at 9S, made in 165 minutes. Manawatu At the Wickets McVicar and Robertson went to the wickets at 5.7 p.m., when tho light was beginning to fail. The attack was entrusted to Blathwayt and Robertson. McVicar was cautious, Robertson monopolising the scoring. With the total at 13, hesitation cost McVicar his wicket, a run-out resulting. Robertson, after scoring 16, survived a confident appeal for a catch behind the wickets off his namesake. With Murchison and Robertson associated, tile scoring rate livened, but with 36 on the telegraph, Robertson sent Fraser into the hands of Boon at mid-off.—36-2-24. Cutler, the incoming batsman, survived only two balls, the third seeing him go l.b.w. —37-3-0. After the innings had been in progress 63 minutes, Murchison was caught by Fraser at mid-off off Stew-art—so-4-17.

The sun was now shining and the light was better than at the start ot Hanawatu’s innings. J. Ongley was at the wickets 10 minutes in compiling three, when he hit Stewart into the hands of Beeves. Five were now down for 58. Stumps were drawn for the day with the score at 65 without further loss. Detailed scores: — POVERTY BAY. . ) First Innings.
