Au ambitious youth came to Dublin from the country in order to join the pdlice. Ho passed the usual examination and was then interviewed. ‘‘Well, young man,” said an ollicer, “you look like a promising young fellow. You have a good general knowledge, I hope? Can you tell mo how many miles it is from Dublin to Cork?” The ambitious youth became alarmed. “Look here, sir," he blurted out, “if you are going to put mo on a beat of that length I'd rather help father with the cows.'*
