Dominion Bowling Championships

Last Year’s Rink Winners Eliminated

Post-sectional Play Concludes To-day Per Press Association.

CHEISTCHUKCH, Last Night,

Bull (Blenheim) 26 beat Beasonsall (Sydenham) 22. Cooke (Barrington) 28 beat Clark (Stratford) 16. Young (E.S.A., Christchurch) 24 beat Hadwin (Hutt) 23.

The fifth, and sixth rounds of tho rinks championships at tho New Zealand bowling tourney to-day decided tho fato of many entrants because defeats in. either or both rounds eliminated for many. rinks their chances of taking part in .tho postrsectional play which will begin on Wednesday. The following, with six wins, have already qualified irrespective of the result of to-morrow's play: —Avon, Stratford (Dickinson skip), West Harbour (Veitch), Onehunga (Livingstone), Dunedin (Anderson), Shirley (Eamsay). The following iiave"'five wins:— Kaiapoi Working Men's Club (Simpson), Phoenix (Thomson), Edgeware (Gagliardi), West End, Timaru (CurTie), Canterbury (Gordon), Sumner (Barlow), United (Smith), Baimacewan (Ferguson), Eoslyn (Tyrrell), Temuka (Edwards), Auckland (Ure), Island Bay (Priddle), Eiccarton Eacecourse (Burgess), West End, Auckland (Bremner), New Brighton (Besley), Balmacewan (McDonald), Caledonian (Lloyd), Auckland (Walker), Kia Toa (Grey), Christchurch (Marks). The most notable amongst the absentees in the post-sectional play will be last, year’s winning rink from the Grey Lynn Club skipped by Whittle. After two losses on Saturday the rink had to win both its games to-day and both to-morrow to be certain of the post-sectional play. In the fifth round this morning Whittle suffered another surprise defeat at the hands of the Canterbury rink skipped by Gordon. The leader in the section in which the Grey Lynn rink was entered is the West End (Timaru) rink skipped by Currie, who had five wins in succession. He lost in .the sixth round to Barlow (Sumner). Another surprise defeat of to-day was also in the morning round when E. A. Smith, skipping the United rink, which had not before suffered a loss, went down to J. E. Smith (Kelburn), 24 —18. It was Smith’s first taste of defeat in both the pairs and rinks and as he had not been a competitor in the singles it was his first loss in 12 games. Tyrrell, of Eoslyn, who has five wins to his credit, is in charge of a rink which has done excellently so far, playing bowls worth going far to see. Another rink doing even better is the Dunedin one skipped by Anderson which has had six wins. A Canterbury rink with J. D. Marks as skip has also been playing good bowls. Eepresented this year for the first time at a Dominion tournament, the Avon (Stratford) Club rink skipped by Dickinson, has also been playing impressively and is certain to be in the post-sectional play. This morning Dickinson's rink retained its lead in the section by beating a Kelburn rink with Gray as skip, the chances of which had also been greatly favoured as it finished yesterday still undefeated.
