Surprise at the number of people in Montreal, Canada, who aid not speak the English language was expressed by Dr. P. S. Foster in an address on his recent trip to members: of the Royal Empire Society at Christchurch. Dr. Foster stated that .nore than half the population of thi3 town could not speak English, most of them adnering to the French dialect spoken by their ancestors. Even some of'tho traffic signals and signboards on the shops were written in French, he added.
