Art Gallery-Museum For Palmerston North
Possibly no district lias such, a wealth of Maori history as the Manawatu-Ho-rowhenua Counties. The Maori Napoleon, To Bauparaha, made his sortie early in the last century from the Waikato, conquering the various tribes he met on tho way, down the coast and eventually came to rest, if only temporarily, at Kapiti Island. He was undoubtedly a capable lighter and a great military leader, and during his life in this district he certainly made his presence felt amongst the very considerable number of Maoris who lived between Plimmerton and Rangitikei. Such a wonderfully fertile district was a plum indeed and as time -went on naturally there was an accumulation of native war munitions which to-day would be of great value. Prom time to time valuable collections have gone to other parts simply because there was no museum in the district to which they could be presented. Although it is now late in the day, perhaps, tp secure any great collections, there must be many articles of Maori arts and crafts which could find a place in the . Palmerston North Museum and Art Gallery when established. There has been made a forward move in tho erection of tho gallery and museum for the Palmerston North City Council has already voted £250 towards the fund.. Tor . the building, and the local Art Society has donated a further £2st ' The Palmerston North 50,000 Club has also interested itself in the project and tho City Council has been asked to call a meeting so that steps can, be taken to raise funds.
