Sovereigns in Stocking

A clerk in a bank in North Wales w r as asked recently to make out a cheque in exchange for cash by an old man. Tho man, a general dealer in a remote village, explained that ho had no banking account, preferring to keep his money at home. In a. lifetime of saving ho had filled a stocking with more than £IOOO of sovereigns. His family had always kept their money in this way, and his sister, who lived near him, had a similar amount in sovereigns in a chest of drawers.

Waen the bank clerk told the old man of the price his sovereigns would fetch if he sold them he replied in Welsh:

“This has been the security my family have relied on for generations, and nothing will make me part with the gold.”
