Agent Charged

SERIES or DEFALCATIONS. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 11. A series of defalcations was admitted in tho Magistrate’s Court this morning by Henry Alan Morray Smith, aged 28, a company agent, employed by tho Loan and Mercantile Agency Company at Rakaia. The amount involved was £192 4s. Mr. F. F. Reid, S.M., remanded Smith to January 14. Chief Detective Dunlop said that Smith had diverted a cheque in payment for sheep to his own use. In another instance a fictitious purchase ol ryegrass on behalf of the company had resulted in Smith collecting the cash. He had also failed to pay wages tax on account of farmers whose business he had been handling. Mr. Young, for Smith, said that Smith found his salary of £265 a year did not cover the expenses involved in entertaining numerous clients. Smith had borrowed petty cash and had found it impossible to repay the money. One client was so pleased with Smith’s business ability that he had offered to make full restitution.
