Fire completely demolished a dwelling situated on Ruff's road, Bunnythorpe, in the early hours of yesterday morning. The house was occupied by Mr and Mrs Thompson and family, who were in bed at the time and were forced to make a hasty exit through a window.

It was announced by Hon. F. Langstone at Wellington on Saturday that, in anticipation of an increase in the number of visitors to Milford Sound following the opening up of direct road access, the Tourist Department is building a new' launch for those waters. It is practically completed and will be launched from the yard of Messrs. Collings and Bell, Auckland, about January 20. It will be called the Donald Sutherland, in honour of a pioneer of the Milford country. The length is 45 feet, beam 11* feet, and depth approximately 5 feet, with a draught of 3 feet. It is licensed to carry 60 persons, and a 50-55 h.p. Diesel engine will give a speed of approximately 10 knots. She will go from Auckland to Milford under her own power. She is fitted wit a a two-way wireless installation.

English speaking people probably lose a good deal in picturesqucncss by not applying to their children, as the Maoris and many of the Easterners do, names that have a meaning of their own. In Auckland the custom is well illustrated in tho family of Rev. Y. S. Chau, the missiouer of the Presbyterian Church to the Chinese in New Zealand. His oldest boy, born before he left his native land, is named Choung Shang, or “Born in Dr. Sun’s City.'' Next comes a bright little two-year-old Sun Shang, whose name conveys the information that ho was “Born in New Zealand.” The little daughter, just a few months old, lma a name with a double meaning, Wall Ying, which is either “Beautiful” or “A Chinese Girl Born in an English Land.”
