Rinks Championship at Bowls Tourney

Many Competitors Taking Part

Several Surprises in First Two Rounds Per Press Association.

CHEISTCHUECH, Last Night. Thirteen greens were in use to-day for tlie start of the rinks championship in the New Zealand bowling tournament. Sectional play will continue until Tuesday. There are 136 rinks taking part, including five made up of members of the visiting party from New South Wales. The weather was again overcast and threatening for the start of play, but the greens were in excellent order. The rounds to-day provided, as the first rounds of the rinks play always do, more than a few surprises, rinks which have achieved striking success in former championship tournaments going down in some cases to rinks from comparatively unknown clubs. The biggest surprise in the first round was the defeat of the Auckland rink skipped by the redoubtable Maxu el Walker, by the Gore Club's rink, skipped by W. Scobie. This game, played on. the Elmwo.od.green, attracted a big gallery and those who came to watch were not disappointed. As might have been expected, the scoring was high, but the final result —Scobie’s rink Walker’s rink 26—came as a surprise. The success of the Gore Club against such strong opposition was very popular with southern bowlers. 'lho biggest win of the morning was recorded by a Christchurch rink, Sprcydon, which, skipped by J. ,J. Kennerley, whc had other successes in the pairs and singles, beat a Caledonian rmk skipped by W. T. Henaghan, by 41 to 15. The champion rmk last year, Grey Lynne, skipped by H. Whittle, is defending the title,-but there is a change in the personnel, J. Higginson praying third in place of W. Liversidge. The Linwood rink, skipped _by u. Wilson, which won in 1934, is again competing, but with S. Sneddon replacing H. F. Gibson (who now lives in Dunedin and is skipping the Balmacewan rink) as third player. J his rink had a bad start by suife-mg defeat m the first round. W. Bremner, the well-known Auckland player, is again skip of a rink, which includes C. E. Hardley, who has already met with much success at the tournament. Bremner took his rmk to an easy win in the first round. The New South Wales rinks fared badly in the first round. Five were entered for the competition, and the only one to score a win was that skipped by J. Purvis, which beat an Imperial (Christchurch) rink, skipped by E. S. Draper, by the narrow margin of 23—22. The others, although they made a good showing, were defeated. The Linwood rink, skipped by Wilson, which had won the rinks championship in 1934, suffered defeat at vhe hiaos cl a Foatherston rink skipped by H. Eolis. Another extaordmary score, tile biggest yet for the tournament, was jot up in the second round at St. Albans, when a Thorndon rink skipped by M. J Casey beat a Christchurch rink, W. Brown skip, 41 —14, in 24 heads. Tha last head was not played, for it wai more than obvious that it could no alfect the result. To qualify for the post-sectional play,

Section A First Eound.

Section D First Eound,

Section F First Round,

a rink must have won six or more games in its section, tied in its section or be> u a straight-out section winner. In the post-sectional play a rink twice defeated will not continue.
