Croquet Championships at Hastings

NORTH ISLAND TITLES. Play in tho North Island croquet championship tournament at Hastings on the first day was mainly confined to handicap doubles, although a few singles were got off. After beating Mesdames Tiffen and Bennett (ss) 2G—l9, Mesdames Gambrill and Recs-Davies (45) succumbed to Mesdames Caldow and Mangelson (0i) 17 —26 in the handicap doubles. Of this match the Tribune states:— Both Mrs Caldow and Mrs G-ambrill wero tho first to get going and playing steadily wero very soon on four back. At this stage Mrs Rces-Davies had her clip on the sixth hoop with Mrs Mangelson’s on No. 3. With the aid of a half bisque the latter player redeemed an over-run hoop and gradually worked her clip round. In and out play followed for some time, but at critical stages the shooting by Mrs | Mangelson was excellent and the game i ended 26—16 in favour of Mesdames Caldow and Mangelson. Mrs Bartlett, beat Miss Logan, 26 —24. Mrs Gibbs beat Mrs Tomlinson, 26—15.

Mrs Kibblewhite beat Mrs Stringer, 26—2.
