The marked lack of local' support merely reflects universal sentimont. At one time certain sections put their weight behind the prohibition movement considering that economic benefits would accruo to the community in general and to them-i selves in particular. Every country that has experimented with prohibition has done so at colossal expense. America spent billions of dollars trying to enforce this impossible law. Tho knowledge that prohibition would cost New Zealand millions of pounds and years of social and political turmoil explains why the cause is deserted by all but a few theorists who ignore, the lessons of practical experience- (Advt.)
