Secondary School Control in City

GENERAL MATTERS CONSIDERED. General matters affecting the welfare of secondary schools in tho city were dealt with at a meeting of the Palmerston North High Schools' Board of Governors and Technical High School Committee held last evening. Air. J. A. Nash, AI.P., presided and tlicro wero also present: Airs. AI. Aitchison and Alessrs. A. J. Graham, YV. R. Birnio and J. YV. Rutherfurd. Apologies for unavoidable absence were received from Alessrs. AI. H. Oram, T. R. Hodder and G. Tremaine.

Gills’ High School. Mrs. M. Rhodes, principal at the Girls’ High School, reported: Tho roll is now 245 and the average attendance 227.17. Since tho beginning of the term one new pupil was enrolled, three pupils have transferred to other schools, and four have obtained positions. A basketball team from the Feilding Agricultural High School visited the school on Saturday, September 21. Our team won the match by 27 goals to 12. One of our A team, Irene Peuketh, hud the honour of representing Manawatu at the New Zealand basketball tournament held in YVellington in August last. On Friday, October 11, Mr. YY r , G. Black visited the school and addressed the girls on the subject of health camps. He stressed the need for all to assist this most deserving cause. The grounds aro in excellent condition. At school house the health of the girls is excellent. The grounds are coming on well, all shrubs being now well-established. Boys’ High School.

The roll number at tho Boys’ High School was 355, reported Mr. J. Murray (rector). He added that the average attendance was 307. “Sinco the beginning of this term 20 boys havo left to tako up the following positions: Office, 8; journalism, 1; bank, 1; shop and warehouse, 0; trades, 3; farm, 1. Mr. C. B. Beatson left on October 5, while Air. H. YV. YVotton, of Wanganui, has occupied a relieving position during the past fortnight. Mr. F. D. Tucker began duty to-dav.” The school concert had been held on October 4 last, the receipts being £24 10s Gd. On October 7 Bishop Hilliard, of Nelson, had visited the school and delivered an address. On October 10, at the invitation of Messrs. J. A. Nash and J. Linklatcr, Al’s.P., SO boys had visited YVellington and had spent a most entertaining and instructive time. Yesterday Air. YV. Gray, first rector of the school, had paid a visit. Technical High School.

In his report the director of jtho Technical High School stated:—As a subsidy of 33 1-3 per cent, on the total cost of construction is available from the Unemployment Board for expenditure on the erection of assembly halls, etc., I havo to recommend that consideration be given to tho building of the kitclienetto to our hall, to the installation of heating, and to tho provision cf seating. Approval is sought for putting a netting screen along tho trees adjoining tho tennis courts, for the putting of a water channel outside the netting, and for top-dressing No. 3 court during the holidays. I have to rccom mend that consideration be given to top-dressing the school yard during the next holidays. Approval is sought for the provision of seating along the house side of the assembly hall (outside). An audited statement will be placed before you showing that the gross proceeds of daffodil day amount to £6.1 6s 7d, and tho net proceeds to £56 3s Bd. The annual cross-country run held on Alassey College property on October 2 resulted ns follows: Arawa Club 1, Tainui Club 2, Ngapuhi Club 3, Eangitane Club 4. This is the first time the Arawa Club has been successful in this event. Tainui and Eangitane havo each won threo times. The operetta for which tho day pupils havo been working hard for some time will be produced in tho Opera House on Friday, November S, and on Saturday afternoon, November 9. The evening students’ tennis club held their opening clay on Saturday, October 5, tho first ball being sent over tho net by Air. J. A. Nash, AI.P. The dinnercooking competitions aro in progress, the judges being Alesdames Aitchison and Dalgleish and Aliss Kelly. A donation of one guinea has been received from Alessrs. Barningham and Co., Dunedin, towards the dinner-cooking prize fund. The reports were adopted and tha matter of additions to the assembly hall was left in the hands of a subcommittee with other proposed alterations at the Technical School.
