BAXTER TO RIDE PALFRESCO IN THE DERBY Received Monday, 7 p.m. MELBOURNE, Oct. til. TJio New Zealander, E. Baxter, lias been engaged to ride Palfrcsco in the Derby. Epigram beat Wliittingliam c —.• six funonjs on the grass in 1.10 at Caulfield.

RANGITIKEI RACING CLUB. The committee of the Rangitikei Racing Club met in Bulls on Wednesday last, there being present Messrs. R. D. McKelvie (chairman), G. H. Archer, R. Mackay, Q. 0. W ilson, J. H. Russell, J. Tricker, F.' 0. Bailey, D. W. "Wilson, B. J. Frecklington, J. J. Mansell and J. E. Walker. The financial statement showed that subscriptions were coming in well and accounts amounting to £37 4s Gd were passed for payment. The following new members were balloted for and unnanimously elected:— Messrs F. "W. Tostevin (Sanson), G. D. Flower (Bulls), D. W. Koster (Sanson), P A. Doughty (Bulls), D. G. Friedrich (Marton), C. V. Day (Palmerston North), and W. Davison (Rougotea). This brings tho total membership to 170.

Tho course and the tracks were reported to be in splendid order; also that posts and rails had been renewed where necessary. It was agreed to purchase a grader for preparing the tracks. The secretary was instructed to communicate with members of the raceday staff, and finaliso arrangements for ;the meeting. Tho committee expressed pleasure at receiving such a large number of nominations from all over tho Island. Should tho number of acceptances exceed the safety limit in tho Trial Stakes the committee will meet .at once to determine tho necessary action.

A NUNLUCKY TRIP.

The Riverton trainer, A. McKay, arrived back from Melbourne with Taulamai on Monday, says the Southland News. 111-luck dogged the Australian trip throughout. Tho Paladin gelding was not injured in the rough trip across, as was commonly supposed, but struck his sound off foreleg in ono of his races in Sydney, and it was this, injury, that hampered him throughout, while at his one appearance at Melbourne he suffered several injuries in the running which necessitated his return to New Zealand. His trainer is hopeful of getting him to stand up to another preparation. Ho looks wonderfully fit,and it has been decided to give him a few weeks’ spell.

A PROFITABLE WEEK At York (Eng.), 011 August '2B, ;-S.Donoghuo won. another good race on Museum, who was successful in this year’s Irish Derby. Tho value of the race was £1977, so it was worth win-

ning. The following Sunday, Donoghuc had another good win, being successful on the French horse, Admiral Drake, in ,tho Grand International of Ostend, for which the Aga Khan’s Theft, ridden by G. Einhards, was a strong favorite, and finished third. Admiral Drake started at a good price, and the race, was worth 600,000 francs. After the race Eichards complained ijtrongly of the bumping ho received, saying he never received a chance of a good passage. From, that, it would seem as if some of the Continental jockeys rnther resented his riding in the Taee.

YEARLING SALES IN FEANCE At tho recent yearling sales .in France the Aga Khan offered 30, but disposed of only sixteen, the highestpriced of these being approximately £4OOO for a grey filly by Eustom Pasha from Mumtaz Mahal. The sixteen made a total of about £14,000. Several of tho principal lots were bought for England, theso including the Mumtaz Mahal filly, whose purchaser was Mrs Macdonald Duckanan, daughter of the lato Lord IVooiavington. Among those passed in was a grey or roan half-brother, by Pharos, to Mahmoud, who is one of the best two-year-olds that has raced in England this season. A prominent French owner, Mr. Jean Prat, went to £3OOO for him, but it was considered insufficient. Presumably he will be raced in England next season bv the Aga Khan.

PAID FOE GETTING EVEN It is stated that intense rivalry has caused bed blood between some of Nrw York’s leading jockeys. At SaraMerritt and Coucci were the most successful riders, and Coucci was subsequently suspended at Aqueduct (New York) for ten days for fouling Merritt. The following day Coucci went looking for Merritt, and got even with his fists. His satisfaction was short-liv-ed, as he was then suspended for the wholo of tho Aqueduct meeting “for practices detrimental to the best interests of tho Turf.” In addition the case was referred to the Jockey. Club for.further action. ...

Mrs. Payno Whitndy, who pays Coucci a retainer, is the sufferer by his folly. Many followers of racing credit Coucci with being the second best rider in the .United States,

GERMANY’.S - RICHEST RACE The value of tho Brown Ribbon of which was 20,000 marks in the year of its establishment in 1933, is to be raised to 100,000 marks neit year.. ' This:-will be much- the richest prize in Germany, the Hamburg Derby being worth marks only. The Brown Ribbon is a race open to horses of all countries and is for three-years and upwards.
