Singapore Dock
SUCCESSFUL FINAL TESTS WILL TAKE STRAIN OF THE HEAVIEST BATTLESHIPS
United Press Association.— By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. LONDON, October 17.
A Sun-Herald service message ■ says that it is now possible to operate the entire British Fleet in the Pacific from the shelter of a" well fortified strategic point as the result of a successful final test of the vast new Singapore graving dock, advice of which has reached official quarters. The dock demonstrated the ability to take the strain- of the heaviest battleships afloat. Sixty-nine million
w -lions of water exceeding 3Ub,.mJ tons were pumped and syphoned into the dock during a fortnight from the Straits of Johore, the terrific pressure on the sides and floor causing no sinking, shifting or bending and proved that the battleships Rodney and Nelson and Hood will be able to refit at Singapore.
