Senior Batsmen Found Runs Hard to Get in Opening Games

C.McVicar and K.Hatch Were

Brilliant Exceptions

Both Just Missed Centuries

The Manawatu Cricket Association’s 1935-36 season was ushered in on Saturday, but the weather, though fine, was not favourable, there being a fairly strong breeze and a decidedly chilly temperature. The wickets were dead and the outfields slow with the result that comparatively few runs were scored,

In the senior games at the Sportsgrounds Y.M.C.A. and City Council were at the wickets all afternoon, both innings concluding too late for their opponents to take a share of the run-getting. Y.M.C.A. made 180 and City Council 169, the outstanding features of the afternoon being the batting of Keith Hatch, who knocked up 98 for Y.M., and Colin McVicar, who batted right through and who wanted one run for his century when his last partner lost his wicket and City Council’s innings closed. In the other senior game on the School grounds the bowlhad a profitable day, School, after making 120 in their innings, securing five of Palmerston’s good wickets for 20 runs. .

YM.C.A.—UNITED As in the other senior game at the Sportsground, the cricket in the Y.M.C.A.-United tussle was in keeping with the conditions, and the spectators, except for several hardy souls, preferred to watch the play from the shelter of their cars, which were parked round tho fence. Y.M.C.A. won tho toss and had first uso of the dead wicket. Though they did not make very many runs, Spiers and Edlin gave the side a good start and 20 had gone up before Edlin was beaten by Gallicbau with his first delivery. Spiers followed Edlin with the addition of only a single and Murchison and .K. Hatch then became associated and in a partnership which was a mixture of aggressive and quiet play, the, pair rau the score to 60 before Murchison was bowled when attempting to sweep Cutler to leg. Struthers looked as if he was going to make runs, but he failed to connect with a slow full toss. Hatch and Spelman were together and the score 75 for four at the tea adjournment. The bowling did not look impressive but it was being treated with every respect, possibly because of the state of tho wicket.

Following the adjournment Hatch continued on his run-getting way, and he and Spelman had added 47 before Spelman was caught behind me wickets. From this on it was Hatch, who was batting very solidly, who was the principal run-getting agent, and towards evening it became a problem as to whether ho would reach his century before the innings closed. With the last man in his chances did not appear too bright, but Edwards played the rock and it was Hatch who took the risk which resulted in his dismissal’ when two runs short of tho required runs. He was stumped when attempting to get a leg ball away. He i hit a brace of sixes and eight fours.

CITY COUNCIL —OLD BOYS City Council, who met Old Boys on the No. 2 wiekety kept their opponents in the field all tho afternoon, tho innings, which closed well after 6 p.m., being worth 169 runs, of which total Colin McVicar contributed 99, being still unbeaten when the last wicket fell.

Old Boys won the toss and put City Council in, C. McVicar and Lyne opening to the bowling of O’Keefe and Waldegrave. When a dozen runs had been scored Lyne was run out. The MeVicars, father and son, then ran the score to 33 before tho veteran was beaten by one from Louisson. Davidson joined Colin McVicar and the halfcentury was signalled before Gallichan accounted for Davidson. Gallichan got one past Nairn before ho got going and at tho tea interval tho score was 60, McVicar then being 34. Continuing, McVicar and Gavey rattled on . 31 runs for- tho fifth wicket, the latter being more aggressive than his partner during this stage. With Gavey back in the pavilion it was left to McVicar to make the “ tail wag,” and his own total was 99 before the tenth wicket fell 2 the innings be-

Tho senior match set down for the High School ground was that between High School and Palmerston, and at the closo of play High School had completed their first innings and Palmerston had five wickets down. The School score of 122 contained a useful contribution by Hearsey, who, before he was caught by Leet, did some good -work in putting on 48. The other opening batsman, Gatley, just reached double figures. Of tho remainder but one remained sufficiently long to claim in excess of 20. Four Palmerston trundlers shared tho School wickets, Berquist taking four and Hatch three comparatively cheaply. The day was well advanced when the first Palmerston batsmen went to the crease and five of their number could compile no more than nine. With the two not-out men, Hoilier and Mullins, Palmerston’s aggregate at the close of the day stood at five for 20. The School bowler, Hearsey, who had taken three of tho opponents’ wickets for four runs, sent down no less than nine maidens. Stewart accounted for the other wicket. Detailed scores:— HIGH SCHOOL

JUNIOR A GRADE OLD BOYS LEAD IMA TOA The first-innings scores in the Old Boys-Kia Toa jnunior A game were small, but before the end of the day Kia Toa batsmen indicated that the game would be much brighter on tne second day. Batting first, Kia Toa were dismissed for 41, Piercey (12) being the only batsman to reach double figures against tho bowling of Thompson (5-16) and Trow (5-21). In reply Old Boys were all out for 47, Bramwell (11) doing best against the bowling of Morgan (4-14), Piercey (2-12), land Peck (2-1). When stumps were drawn for the day Kia Toa had knocked up 40 runs without loss in their second innings, Peck and Jordan batting vigorously, the former’s score being 31. The game will be concluded next Saturday.

: City Council had first use of tho wicket against High School, and thanks to a splendid innings by Weston, who scored 126, including six sixes and 16 fours, City Council scored 200. Other double-figure batsmen were Whiting (18), Bambury (17), Lang (14) and Wiggins (13). Anderson (4-73), Waldegravo (2-17) and Cameron (2-17) bowled well for School. When stumps were drawn High School’, after losing two wickets for 16 and three for 23, had 100 on the board without further loss, a great recovery. Anderson (51) and Hunt (30). had
