Sweeping Boycott Of Italian Exports

BRITISH PLAN AT .GENEVA. GENEVA, Oct. 10. A sweeping boycott of all imports from Italy was proposed by Mr. Anthony Eden (Britain) when the economic sub-committeo reopened its examination of sanctions. Ho submitted a resolution whereby all members of the League pledge themselves to cease purchasing goods ,of Italian origin excopt gold and silver. It is understood that the resolution was widely supported. The proposal will be reconsidered at to-morrow’s meeting. The official text of Mr. Edcu’s proposals shows that the boycott -would bo applicable to goods from Italy and' Italian territories. Goods subject to existing contracts would not be exempted from the provisions, but goods en route at the time of tho prohibition would bo exempted. Governments may fix an appropriate date, making allowance for the time, normally necessary to transport goods from Italy, after which goods would be prohibited. Air. Eden explained that 70 per cent, of Italy’s exports went to League members. Italy had made great efforts to reduce her imports of luxuries, but there had been a constant drain on her gold reserves and resources. Continuation of the war was bouud to reduce the nation’s purchasing power, M. Litvinoff energetically intervened. Ho favoured making the embargo ou sales to Italy as complete as possible, embracing not only key products but materials and manufactures which she needed. Switzerland and Poland made reservations regarding Air. Eden’s proposal, which other delegations, including Prance, asked timo to study. It is intended to obtain by the weekend the approval of tho full Committee, whatever economic step is ultimately recommended.
