Two Million Banana Trees Uprooted
JAMAICA SWEPT BY HURRICANE. United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. 'Received Sunday, 8.30 p.m. KINGSTON (Jamaica), Sept. 27. Gales up to 50 miles an Lour which are feared to bo the forerunners of a hurricane, swept Jamaica, uprooting banana trees to an estimated total of 2,000,000, which is 35 per cent, of the colony’s crop. Menace Misses Miami DEVASTATION IN CUBA. Received Sunday, 0.50 p.m. NEW YORK, Sept. 28. The eastern coast of Florida to-day waited tensely for the tropical hurricane which was reported to bo sweeping northward, having caused considerable loss of life and damage to property in Cuba and Jamaica early this evening. However, the Weather Bureau reports indicated that tho hurricane had moved slightly eastward aud its full force will probably miss Miami and the coastal points northward, although warnings were sent out for the guidance of shipping.
According to reports from Havana an area 150 to 200 miles wide across Cuba was swept by the hurricane. Thirty are reported killed at Cienfuegos in the Santa Clara province and over a thousand homes were destroyed, while other property was damaged.
