Spring Racing at Otaki

The weather was ideal for the spring meeting of the Otaki Maori Racing Club on Saturday and there tfas a big attendance of the public. The course was in better order than for years and the racing was interesting throughout. The totaiisator handled £7227, as compared with £6202 10s on the second day, a Saturday, of the corresponding meeting last year. Results are as under:—

Fancied hurdle candidates wero Arctic Star Gold Cure, Red Sun and Kia Tina, and three of them fell. Gold Cure, who was in front with Karaugapai, came to grief at the fivo furlongs and Kia Tina wont Over him. Then at the last fence Spender, who -was leading, tipped out and Arctic Star, who looked a likely winner, came down over him. This left' Kanlngapai, Battleground and ' 'd Sun to light out (he finish and the latter won nicely by a short neck from Battleground, -with Karangapai three lengths further back. Royal Papa was fourth.

(Winner trained by M. Jennings, Wanganui). The Image Pays a Price. There was a surprise in the Maiden Plate and the winner, The Imago, paid a, double figure dividend. She is a full sister to The Dimmer, w r ho was the star performer at the Australian Jockey Club’s autumn meeting some years ago, when he won the Autumn Stakes, Sydney Cup, Cumberland Plate and A.J.C. Plate. The Image was bought by Mr. M. Aiillan at the 1932 Trentham sales, and later sold to Air. Air. F. Bristol. Going Gay, Surprise Item and Eutheo’s were , first away. Lacey and Myriam being slow to begin. At the far turn Surprise Item, Going Gay, Entheos, Conversion and Middle were running in a bunch, with The Imago nearest of tho others. Going Gay led into the straight, closely followed by Surprise Item, Entheos, Aliddle and Tile Image. There was a short tussle at the distance and then The linage moved to the front to beat Entheos by half a length. Round Score was favourite for tho Katihuku Hack Handicap and he won nicely with a fast run from the bottom of the straight. Finnesko made the early pace from. Dorado, Round Score and Garter Red, but when tho field had settled down the leading bunch consisted of Finnesko, Dorado, Garter Red and Royal King ahead of Round Score, Finnesko, Garter Red and Royal King showed the way across the top and into the straight with Dorado, Treasure Hunt and Round Score, the last named going up fast on the outer. Finnesko made a good run but Round Score collected him at the distance, Finnesko and Dorado finished strongly and Round Score won by a narrow margin, being just over a length from Finnesko, with Dorado a neck further away. Garter Red was fourth, followed by Treasure Hunt and Dumpier.

Gay Boy was a good favourite for the Ling Memorial Stakes, for which five of the nino acceptors paraded.

Sanguine King and Suneo vrere the first to break the line and passing the stand the order was Sunee, Sanguine King and Gay Boy, the other two together. There was no change into tho back stretch, but running to the five furlong peg, Gay Boy ran up to Sunee in the lead and they showed the way across the top and into the straight, Sanguine King being in close attendant clear of Ei.'nent. Gay Boj then drew away from Suneo and although Sanguine King issued a challenge Gay Boy won nicely by two lengths; Sanguine King beating Sunee by half a head for second money. Eminent was fourth.

Sweet Music was first to break the line followed by Lorrelle, Otaura King, Consummation, Round Up, Golden Enterprise and Vinco. They had not gone far before Otauru King joined Sweet Music in the van. Vinco ran up to fourth place before the half had been reached and the order crossing the top and into the straight was Sweet Alusie and Otauru King together, Lorrelle and Vinco together, then Round Up and Consummation. Once in line for the judge nothing had a chance with Sweet Alusie who won decisively by over two lengths from Consummation, with Vinco a length and a-half further back just in front, of Otauru King. Bodyline Boats Hunting Lodge. The open sprint was a fast-run race and, after being threatened by Hunting Lodge half a furlong from home Bodyline finished brilliantly to w.ln by over a length. Bodyline was in .front all the way, Hunting Lodgo being in second place early with Lord Moutoa next. Beau Gallanto was on terms with the leader crossing tho top but Bodyline kept him away from the fence and Bodyline turned for heme just ahead of Beau Gallaute, who swung very wide, and Hunting Lodge. Hunting Lodge looked likely at the distance but Bodyline responded under pressure aud he drew away to win well. Hunting Lodge was just in front of Pladie who came through with a late run, and Beau Gal lante was well back fourth. It was a good performance on tho part of Bodyline whose record this season is three starts and three wins. TAUAIANUKA HACK HANDICAP, ol £80; a mile and 55 yards. 2 CONFISCATION, Messrs E. W. Good Finishing Run By Confiscation Taumau was favourite for the Taumanuka Hack but he was never going kindly and he finished out of a place. Confiscation was second choice and after beginning well she was kept in a hand position and once heads were turned for homo she went through like a flash and won easily by over two lengths ' from Chaste. ' Confiscation, Manawatu and Petrarch led out of, the straight the first time and When the field swuug into the back stretch the order was Manawatu, from Petrarch, Confiscation, Earl Colossus, Chaste, Treasure Hunt, Taumau, Saatoft and Paduos. The leaders crossing the top were Manawatu and Petrarch from Confiscation and Treasure Hunt, with Taumau, Chaste. Earl Colossus, and Santoft following. The order was much the same into the straight where Con-

fiseation cleared out from the others and won as she liked. Chaste was second over a length in front of Treasure Hunt, and Manawatu was fourth followed by Earl Colossus, Petrarch, Santoft and Taumau.

Gold Cure, who came to gnef when in a winning position in the Hurdles, took his place in the held for the Hcrna Te Ao Handicap and he was fourth choice in the betting order. Aiguille, Gold Cure and Limuius, the favourite, wero first to show out, but they had not gone far before Gold Cure had charge. Gold Cure led across the top and into the straight followed by Limuius, Aiguille and Lady Spy. Challenges were issued to Gold Cure at tho bottom of the straight but he never looked like stopping and he won well by a length from Walton Pa.rk who finished like a train from the back. Limuius was third a length away, from Walton Park and Aiguillo was fourth. Next was Grand Jury, whose effort was quite pleasing.
