St. Pat's Ball Marks Close of Rugby Season

BRIGHT SOCIAL FUNCTION

The annual ball of St. Patrick’s Football Club, hatd"last evening in tho Do Luxo hall, was characterised by tho utmost friendliness and pleasure, providing an evening of enjoyment for many footballers and their friends. No trouble had been spared in the preparation of tho hall, tho bright decorations of which had been enhanced by masses of ferns and other greenery, conspicuous on the wall's being the shields of the various clubs of the union.

Among thoso present were Mr A. M. Ongley, president of the Manawatu Rugby Union, Mr H. E. Crawford, a member of tho union; Mr P. Skoglund, acting-secretary, and Mr J. J. O’Shea, president of St. Patrick’s Club. First-class music was provided by a professional orchestra and carried bymeans of amplifiers to every part of the hall.

The duties of M.C. were courteously fulfilled by Mr E. J. Stone, tho popular secretary. Tho ladies’ committee supervising the excellent supper that was served was as follows: Mesdames J. Stone, O’Brien, Tottman, J. Delany, Diggins,' Bourlce, Misses Howarth, McKewen/ Smith and Gibbs; the men’s committee comprising Messrs J. J. O’Shea, J. Delany, B. Howard, T. E. Davidson, P. Ferguson, T. Madgwick, T. McKeweu and 0. Murphy. Beforo presenting tho trophies won during the season Mr A. M. Ongley said he regretted to stato that football had not progressed in public support since his previous term on the council. After watching football for twelve months the speaker said he had been at a loss to know why, because at least three teams had played football throughout the season worthy of any senior city football club. Although tho game had not been supported through the year as it deserved, Mr Ongley hoped there would be a change for the better in tho coming season. He expressed thanks on behalf of the union to St. Patrick’s Football Club for its courtesy in making it possible for the trophies to be presented at its annual ball. >

The trophies won during the season were then handed to the representatives as follow: —

Senior championship. shield: Feilding Old Boys. Junior championship. Broome shield; Old Boys (P.N.). Third grade championship. —Gibbons shield: Old Boys (P.N.).
