The practice of granting special annuities to former members of the House of Representatives who have retired from active politics or who have been defeated at elections is continued in the estimates now before Parliament. Charged against the Pensions Department vote are grants of £IOO each to eight former members. Parliament is also being asked to make special grants to a number of widows of ex-members of both Ileuses.
Tlie danger to fish life caused by the washing of tar from roads into rivers during rainstorms was emphasised in a letter received by the Whakatane County Council at its meeting from the Government ranger.' The letter stated that tar was very poisonous to fish, and road' washings after rain had killed trout in a river 400 yards distant from the road. Bitumen, on the other hand, was quite safe to fish life. The ranger desired that the Council’s attention be drawn to the conditions under Section 39 of the Rotorua Trout Fishing Regulations. The Council decided to ask that the ranger should notify it if in any case he noticed that its road work might be harmful to fish. /
