is..• - From Our Own Correspondent. The ladies of the local golf club continued their stroke competitions on Saturday afternoon in brilliant weather. The following- were the scores registered: Mrs R. Shailer 55 nett, Miss L. Fromm '67 nett, Mrs E. Conlan and Miss J. Oyston 60 nett, Mrs M. A. Brereton 61 nett, Mrs A. T. Nichols 65 nett, Mrs F. C. Raikes 66 nett, Mrs A. Hobbs 70 nett and Mrs J. Connell 76 nett. Over the week-end a friendly match was played with a. weak team from the Shannon Club when an enjoyable day was spent by ali. At the conclusion of the day’s play, Mr A. T. Nichols, on behalf of the- local -club, thanked the visitors for coming and expressed the opinion that every player had enjoyed the day to the full. -Replying Mr Mead, president of the Shannon Club, thanked the ladies for the afternoon tea and expressed the hope that some of the local players would be present at the closingday of the Shannon Club. The following was the result of fourball match played in tlio morning, Shannon players mentioned first: M. Stern and A. , Morgan beat It. A. Nichols and M. Moffat, Ventry-Smith and Tremewan beat Vealo and Hall, McLean and Mead lost to A. T. Nichols and E. Conlan, Rawlinson and Mclntosh lost to J. Connell and M. Mills, Graham and Brann lost, to J. A. Oorilan and Gordon, Gudse.ll and Mrs Morgan halved with J. Reay and Shailer. Result: Oroua Downs 3 games, Shannon 3 games, 1 game halved. The results of the single played in the afternoon were as follows: Stern lost to R. A. Nichols, Morgan lost to M. Moffat, Ventry-Smith beat Veale, Tremewan beat Hall, McLean beat A. T. Nichols, Mead lost to E. Conlan, Rawlinson beat Connell, Mclntosh lost to Mills, Graham lost to J. A. Conlan, Brann lost to VV. Gordon. Gudsell lost to J. Reay. Result: Oroua Downs 7 games, Shannon 4 games. Euchre. Last Thursday the Women's Institute held a euchre in the local hall which concluded the series the aim of which was to supply sufficient funds to paint the hall. A disappointing attendance was experienced. Mrs A. Bird and Miss D. Christensen cut off for the ladies’ first prize which was won by Mrs Bird while for the consolation Mrs A. Hobbs won from Mrs W. Marchant. For the men’s first prize Messrs W. Spicer, A. Bird, J. A. Conlan and E. Christensen cut off, Mr J. A. Conlan gaining first prize with Mr Spicer second. Mr A. Albury won the consolation prize. A points prize for the whole of the series was won by Mrs A. Albury. Supper was served after which dancing was commenced, music being Supplied by Mrs H. Olliver .with Mrs W. Scott acting as M.C. Personal. The friends of Mr and Mrs H. Proctor will join with them in their grief on the death of their eldest soil who passed away towards the end of last week. A somewhat unusual and unfortunate accident befei little Valerie Burling who, while walking With her father, slipped and bit off some of her tongue, necessitating several stitches. The friends of .Mr F. Moffat will be pleased to know that he is making steady progress towards complete recovery fora his recent illness. Continued fine weather would soon cause a strong growth of grass which, combined with full herds, should have the local factory running at full strength. No great amount of rain is now needed to cause the appearance of numerous little pools over the paddocks. Farmers look forward to a good season. The members of the .local golf dub are notified that the closing day of the dub will bo held on October 20 when several competitions will be indulged, in. ,
