From Our Own Correspondent Municipal Affairs.

Those present at the monthly meeting o£ the Foxton Borough Council were the Mayor (Mr. M. E. Ferrcau) and Councillors John Ross, J. R. Middleton. W. 11. Read, \V. Nyo snr., T. Chaffcy, D. R. Barron, J. L. Christie and the town clerk (Mr W. Trueman). Prior to tlio commencement of the business, motions of sympathy were passed to the relatives of the late Messrs P. J. Mairs, H. Hoskins, J. F. W. Do Bidder and A. Wishart, and to Mrs D. R. Barron in tho loss of her father. The waterworks foreman (Mr \V. IJ. Neville) reported that during the month macrocarpa trees wero planted on reserves, fencing carried out on council sections and levelling work proceeded with on Victoria park. The road foreman (Mr A. U. Huntley; reported that during tho month grading the sides of the road in Cook, Russell and Jenks streets was carried out, turf was carted to Victoria park, ruts were patched in Russell, Coley, Putter and Purcell streets, No. 6 line, Moutoa and Avenue roads; trees were trimmed in Liddell and Park streets, coal was discharged at the gas works, slips wero cleared from Avenue road drain, grading was carried out in Avenue and Moutoa, roads, Purcell street and the north end of Russell street, a culvert in Harbour street was repaired and general m-un'ciuince work was attended t. .

The rei.art on me working of the gasworks stated that the amount of gas manufactured during tho month of July was 352,700 feet, which with tho amount in tho holder on July 1, 11,070 feet, made a total of 364,370 feet. During the month 255.700 feet was used by consumers, 27,806 feet at tho works and there was 12,804 feet In the holder on July 31, making a total of 326,304 feet accounted for and leaving 38,066 feet, representing 10.4 per cent., unaccounted for. Thirty-one tons of coal were carbonised, yielding 11,377 cubic feet of gas to the ton. Tho treasurer reported that during tho month of July t.he sum of 112,786 3s Od was received and banked as follows; Cemetery account, .Ctl 15s; district fund account, 112,744 14s 6d. The ledger balances at July 31 were as follow: Accounts at debit totalled £3,202 5s Od and were rnado up as follows. —Gasworks, £I,BBO 12s Id; general, £5Ol 5s 3d; hospital board, £36 3s 3d; library, £7 8s lid; town hall, £866 Ids 3d. The accounts at credit were.—Rate arrears, £254 10s; cemetery, £125; heavy traffic, £97 10s 10d: interest, £1,381 Ss ltd; reserves, £155 10s 0d; town hall pictures, £327 8s 6d; worker’s dwelling, £26 8s 4d; waterworks, £771 4s P' l ; making a total of £3.139

, The mayor and clerk reported 'on an interview with the Treasury relative to loan conversion. The Mayor said that the visit had. been well worth while and tho position was most satisfactory.

It was decided to forward a letter of appreciation to Mr B. H. Just, of Palmerston North, for donating a quantity of shrubs to the council. It was reported that these had been set out on council sections and reserves.

Misses G. and A. Neylon wrote asking for the supply of the borough water to their property during September and October. Agreed to at a minimum charge of £5 per annum. The Foxton Silver Band offered cooperation with the council in playing for feature pictures outside the hall. The offer was accepted with thanks. The Willard home wrote asking for a small annual subsidy. The Mayor said that tho council’s finances unfortunately did not permit a subsidy although the home was undoubtedly doing good work. Tho reejuest was declined. The Commissioner /of Transport wrote regarding variation df apportionment of heavy traffic fees. The new system proposed practically no allocation for macadam roads.

It w;us decided to protest against any alteration in the present system which would lessen the revenue of small towns carrying a largo amount of through traffic and increase that of large towns.

Personal. Mr IC. Martin, of the local staff of the Post and Telegraph Department, left Foxton on Thursday to take up his duties at Porongahau. Tho friends of Mr. M. O Reilly, an exFoxton resident and Inmate of tho Awapuni Old People’s Home, will regret: to learn that he is at present on tho sick list and confined to bed. Mr and Mrs A. Smith and family, of Liddell street, left Foxton on Wednesday to take up their residence in Wellington Mr J. Newton snr. has been appointed organising secretary for, Manawatu foi tire Licensed Victuallers’ Association. Mr H. Robinson, of Marton, is at pi esent visiting his mother, Mrs F. Robinson, of Thynno street. , . . . , . Tho boy's of the local district high school conducted a road race on Wednesday afternoon, the course for which was down Avenue road, along Spring street, up Norbiton road, into Duncan street and so back to tho school. K. Cluy stall was first home with S. Spring second and C. Gates third. Tho winner’s time was 12 minutes 11 4-5 secs. Combined Rally. Members of the Shannon, Levin, Tokomaru and ICoputaroa Anglican Bible Classes held a combined rally m Foxton on Wednesday evening. On arrival in Foxton, tho visitors, together with local Bible Class members, attended a church service in the Anglican Church, winch was conducted by the Rev. Mr Davis, of Levin, and Rev. 11. S. Kenney, of I‘oxton. At tho conclusion of the service an adjournment was mado to tho Masonic hall where tho Foxton Biblo Class entertained tho visitors at a social evening, which was spent in a pleasant manner with dancing interspersed with items and competitions. Supper was dispensed by members of the local classes ciftei which the Rev Mr Davis on behalf of tho visitors, thanked Foxton for tho very enjoyable evening, and called on tire visitors to give three cheers for Foxton, which wero heartily delivered. Tho Rev. H. S. Kenney replied on behalf of Foxton. Also prsent were Messrs P. Warren and Dixon, members of the Wellington Diocese and Bible Class committee, and in a brief speech Mr Warren thanked Foxton for tho hospitality that had been extended to them and conveyed to tho classes greetings from tho Wellington group. School Affairs.

Three years ago tho Wanganui Education Board decided to remove the asbestos tiles from the roof of tho main school building at Foxton and to cover the structure with iron. One-half of tho work was completed, and at the recent meeting of the hoard tho architect suggested that tho remaining portion should be similarly dealt with. The estimated cost is £l5O, one-third of which is covered by subsidy. It was finally decided to complete tho work. A grant was also received from tho department for metalling tho newly laid out playground.
