HANDICAPS. TARANAKI-EGMONT-WANGANUI HUNT MEETING.

PROM VARIOUS SOURCES

W. E. Pine has been engaged to ride King Eey and Tradesman in their Pakuranga engagements next Saturday. Both these Te Rapa horses are reported to be in good order.

A cash investor, who is known on Melbourne racecourses as tho man with the bowler hat,” came into the limelight again at Caulfield on August 3, when he put £4OO on Sixteen Annas, winner of the Australian Hurdlo Race. Ho has gained a reputation for his betting transactions, all of which aro in cash, and his winnings on Riawena in the Grand National Steeplechase and Nellie Thrico at Williamstown each ran into four figures. On the other hand, ho had £SOO on Full Charge in the Grand National Hurdles and lost his money at the first jump.

11. Skidmoro topped tho Victorian Jockey's premiership with 46 wins, but it was a wonderful performance on tho part of Keith Voitrc, who rodo only half the soason, to get so closo to Skidmore. At ono stago Voitro had a phenomenal run of successes and ho was only seven wins away from Skidmore. Damo Fortuno then deserted Voitro and Skidmoro increased his load to cloven, Voitro’s record was a splendid one, for in addition to 35 winning rides ho was second on 171 occasions and 15 times in third place.

Tuirau carried strange colours at Riccarton when she rau third in the Winter Cup last Tuesday. When W. J.' Broughton broke a leg in a fall from Haste Away he was taken to the hospital wearing the jacket of Messrs W. O. and D. O. Rutherford. Under the circumstances, tho stewards did not call for a lino when Tuirau paraded with her substitute jockey, N. R. McKenzie, carrying Mr R. J. Murphy’s purple jacket, surmounted by a gold cap.

Windsor Lad’s ‘ ‘ schoolmaster, ” Bloater, won tho Loudon Cup for Mr M. H. Benson last month. Bought last year for £IOOO to lead Windsor Lad in his work, he has well fulfilled his task and his victory showed that the experience has not soured him. Many horses can be recalled wliq won good handicaps after beieng purchased to lead classic candidates, but in some cases tho "homo work” has broken their pluck.

AUCKLAND JOCKEY IN INDIA H. N. WIGGINS’ EXPERIENCES Writing from Poona, India, on July S, the Auckland jockey H. N. Wiggins stated that he was doing riding work in preparation for tho sequenco of meetings to commence at Poona on August 2 and lasting two months. The Poona course, he said, was a. nice one, but, unfortunately for him, most of L. 11. Hewitt’s horses wero not ready, and. only two would he able to race at the Poona meetings. Others would be ready for the Bombay meetings. Wiggins said he had not decided whether to remain in India for the Bombay sequenco of five months’ racing, but would dccido after tho Poona meetings, Baker and Scanlon were Australian jockeys ho had met there, and ho liked tho novelty of the surroundings, but tho tone of the .letter suggests that he has still a. greater regard for Auckland.

The fact that Count Ito arrived in a very bad way, and others of Hewitt’s team being unready, may not give Wiggins many chances at Poona. Ho has been offered a retainer of £SOO by an. owner who had his loam trained by native trainers, but at tho time of writing ho had not accepted it.

THIRD TIME LUCKY It must have been with a feeling of thankfulness that A. E. Ellis picked himself up and found ha was not hurt when his mount Hunting Go fell in the Islington Handicap at Riccarton on Thursday. Twice in tho past Ellis has lost good riding engagements at the Australian spring mootings through suffering injuries at this Riccarton gathering. Ho is booked to leave for Sydney next week to rido Wotan and company in their Sydney engagements.

BETTING AT ELLERSLIE A suggestion that the Auckland Racing Club should revert to win-and-placc betting was made by Mr J. D. Webster at the annual meeting of the club. He pointed out that Wellington and Canterbury retained the system, and he thought it would also bo more popular with racegoers at Ellorslio if it was again adopted. The president, Mr O. Nicholson, said that the club had tried the win-aud-place, and found that the present system was tho most suitable. To run the wiu-and-place properly they would need to enter into a large expenditure for a new machine — £20.000 or more. Tho whole system of betting was in the melting pot as far as the New Zealaud Racing Conference was concerned, and until it was finally settled it was no use entering into such an outlay. Tho Takapuna Club, which raced at Ellerslie, had win-and-plaec betting.

ON ENGLISH TURF Phar Lap’s close relation, tho New Zealand-bred filly Rotorua (Night Raid —Gay Round), who was sold to the South African sportsman, Lie Joseph Robinson, provides New Zealand, after tho lapse of a. number of years, with a representative ,on tho English turf, Rotorua, trained by €l. Laing Ward at Kingsbury, Hants, had her first start in tho Apprentices’ Plate, Newbury, on June 27, and ran unplaced. Gay Round, whose second foal, a brother to Rotorua, was sold at the last yearling sales to Mr G. L. Scott, of Melbourne, for 300 guineas, is now at Tho Curragh Stud and will be mated this season with the Gainsborough stallion Leighon. Gay Round is by Gay Lad from Prayer Wheel, a sister to Phar Lap’s dam. Entreaty.
