Sunday Night Concerts
ONE A MONTH RULE DELETED BY COUNCIL
The City Council has on' its books a minute confining Sunday night concerts to one per month. At last evening’s meeting of the council, however, Cr. A. A. Langley made successful endeavour to havo the policy amended so as to allow each application to be considered on its merits. He said that tho concerts were being conducted very strictly and were doing a lot of good. Cr. G. Tremaine supported the motion, pointing out that if it was wrong to hold not more than one concert a month, it was also wrong to hold even one. Cr. W. B. Cameron pointed out that the council had come to its present policy because of a general desire to see tho concerts cleaned up. There had been far too many of them and somo consideration should be shown for those who felt that the concerts interfered with their religious work and control m the home. There had been no request for extra nights from those running the concerts. Cr. -J Hodgens recalled that .the concerts enabled relief workers and those in poor circumstances to got cheap entertainment. The Mayor pointed out that under the censorship of Cr. Tennent, there had been a decided improvement in tho class of programme presented. Cr. Tenncnt declared for a continuance of the present policy. Ho I'eit that the indiscriminate use of Sunday for a money making purpose was wrong and it was definitely tho duty of the council to help those who were trying to educate their children along lines that desired respect for tho Sabbath. Cr. Aitehison considered that one .Sunday night concert a montli was quite sufficient. Tho motion was carried, those against being Crs. Cameron, Aitehison, Tenncnt and .Stevenson. Cr. Tennent asked that his resignation as censor of programmes bo accepted. He could lind time to overseo one a montli but not one a week. Tho Mayor: We have not got more than one a month yet. Cr. Hodgens moved that Cr. Langley be the new censor but the latter disclaimed having the necessary qualifications. Cr. Langley v. as appointed. The Mayor spoke of the valuable services that Cr. Tennent had given as censor and moved that a record be placed on the minutes. ‘"lf the concerts had attained a higher standard and he believed they had, then it was largely due to the work of Cr. Tennent,” tho Mayor added. Tho motion was carried.
