Back from a trip to “Blighty,” Mr. S. Sparling, a resident of Melbourne tho Marvellous, has been telling a reporter of ono of tho local dailies that to see women smoking pipes in English hotels and theatro" lounges is of such common occurrence now that it hardly excites remark. But pipe smoking by women in Australia is no novelty either. Whether tho ladies of Maoriland will follow suit remains to bo seen. If they do, it won’t do them any harm provided they smoke “toasted.” Eiverhead Gold and Desert Gold, now in such request amongst cigarette smokers, can be smoked in a pipe if something very mild is desired, and with keen enjoyment. Navy Cut No. 3 (Bulldog) and Cavendish would appeal to those who preferred something stronger. But Cut Plug No. 10 (Bullshead), would bo too full-flavoured for ladies’ use, although many smokers of the opposite sex consider it tho pick of tho fivo toasted brands..
