Amazing State of Squalor

Such was the amazing state of squalor discovered by the police and health officers investigating the death of Mrs Crawford cabled yesterday that they were forced to wear gasmasks. About one hundred pigeons and thirty-six dogs lived on the premises. In the rubbish were dead pigeons and rats and money and jewellery were strewn about.

A cable yesterday stated that Mrs Crawford, who was aged 78, a widow, was reputed to be worth £70,000, was discovered by the police at her home in Hobart in her bed in the midst of eighteen live dogs. She had been dead three days during which time the dogs had been locked in the room.
