BOXING RING TOPICS

BADMINTON IN VICTORIA

ITEMS OF INTEREST FROM VARIED SOURCES (By C.H.8.) Next Thursday’s heavyweight championship light between Max Baer and James J. Braddoclc at New York will be the fifty-fourth contest since the world championship was recognised as such on March 17, 1597, the date on which Bob Fitzinaurice dealt “Gentleman Jim” Corbett his famous “solar plexus” punch in the 14tli round. Baer is the twelfth recognised champion and Braddock is tho fortieth different challenger to enter tho ring against a holder. Curiously enough Braddoclc figured in one of the preliminaries on the occasion of Baer relieving Primo Camera of the championship just a year ago. “Come-backs” in England. Latest advices from tho Old Country indicate that slumbering heavyweights are showing signs of waking and there is tho possibility of some further excitement in their restricted circles. The ex-South African, Don McCorkindalc, is to stage a come-back and f6r liis initial effort in this respect is to tackle an Italian champion who goes by tho rather incongruous name of Innocentc Baigeurra. Jack Doyle, the Irish heavyweight, though at present in America "where he recently married the ex-wife of Gus Sonnenberg, onetime world champion wrestler, is expected to come back to the fold again, while even Phil Scott, perhaps tho best known of the British “ horozontalists,” is figuring in exhibition bouts.

Change in Plans. Ideas of importing Pietro Gcorgi, Italian-American heavyweight, with a view to stimulating further competition among the big men have been discarded. Pietro has tumbled into a run of misfortune and following a series of defeats his final downfall, so far as a trip to the Dominion was concerned, came with His untimely end against a rising Australian heavyweight in Arthur Campbell. Southland, now', are reported to be negotiating for the Western welter, Cyril Pinto, for a scries of bouts in Invercargill. During the past few r months Pluto has been in tho boom in the Queensland and New South Wales States and he should prove a big attraction.

To-night's Title Bout. Immediate attention in fistic circles is being directed to tho middleweight title bout at Invercargill this evening when the nuggety Wellingtonian, Era Jacobs, and tho Dunedinitc, Maurice O’Brien, for the middleweight title. Jacobs appears to bo on an ‘‘easy thing” in view of his recent defeat of O’Brien, which was followed up by a win over Gus Fitzmauricc at Mastertoa last Saturday. Ho graduatedthrough a tough Australian school and is keen as mustard to mix things with anybody anywhere near his weight. Apart from his ambitions of middleweight champion Ern now has tho light-heavyweight crown in view if Ray Nicol can be persuaded to meet him in the ring. Opening of Season. The boxing season opened before a big house in the Auckland Town Hall on Monday night when, after a splendid amateur programme, Bunny Martin, of Auckland, took a close points decision from Marine Ryan in the ten rounds .professional contest. Tho latter was clever and evasive, but after hard fighting in tho last five rounds, Martin won by virtue of his harder punching.

Badminton plaj’ers are looking forward to a very successful season. Last season there were 24 clubs in the Victorian Association, all in the metropolitan area, but there are hopes of country clubs affiliating in the near future. It is expected that the inter-Stace matches and the first Australian championships will be played in Melbourne this year. At the annual meeting the retiring president, Mr. W. A. Lennard, was again elected to the position. Messrs. S. Harding, R. W. E. Clendinneu and A. R. liorsburgh are the vice-presidents. Mr. 11. 13. Wren, who has held the joint position of secretary and treasurer, was elected secretary, and Mr. N. Badeuach treasurer. The houorary auditors again are Messrs. L. Millgate and A. R. Horsburgh. The members of the council to bo re-elected were Miss L. Gorman, Messrs. L. Carter, N. Chari, R. Cope, J. Grenfell, W. Williams, and the new members Messrs. J. Corr, Leight Carter, F. Moate and I Lenuard. Since the elections Mr. I. Lennard, who was a very good worker and was very popular among players, has died.
