Auckland’s Labour Council Restores Cuts

BUT NOT ON HIGHER SALARIES Per Px-ess Association. AUCKLAND, Last Night. The Labour City Council to-night decided to restore all cuts made in salaries and wages of employees earning £3OO per annum and under. The council on the Labour vmte also rejected a motion to restore .higher salaries. It was resolved to meet the increased cost for the year of £11,700 by increasing the estimated deficit by that amount and not to increase the rates. The council also decided to frame a, bylaw permitting meetings in all but busy traffic areas and in all parks but Albert park.

The estimates adopted by the council provide for the same rate as last year.

Mr. Herman Seifert’s subject at the Citizens’ Lunch Club to-day is “Capital, Production and Distribution. ” Mr, N. S. Mountain will preside.

Born in September, 1862, Viscount Byng started his distinguished military career in ISS3, serving in tho Sudan, South Africa and Egypt. During tho Great'War ho saw service in Gallipoli and France. Ho commanded successively tho Third Division (1914), Cavalry Corps (1915), tho 9th, 17th and Canadian Corps (1916), and tho Third Army (1917). Amongst much distinguished sorvico his advance oil Cambrai was tho most noteworthy. He was raised to the pocrago in 1919 and appointed Governor-General of Canada in 1921. His last notable office was that to which Sir Philip Game has just been appointed, Chief of the London Police.
