Miss Jean Begg to Visit City

Miss Jean I3egg, who is visiting Palmerston North to-day, is one of New Zealand’s own people who has had an interesting history. When quite a young woman she went to Samoa to take charge of a native

girls' liigli school under the London Missionary Society. During the -war, when inen workers wero taken away, she had entire charge of a mission station and tramped miles through the island on her work of evangelising and teaching. After the war she went'to America and studied in the New York School of Philanthrophy. Dor. somo years she was tho executive secretary of a movement in New York, which was concerned with delinquent- girls, and she gained much experience in the real reconstruction of maladjusted lives through scientific methods. Returning later to Now Zealand io visit her people in Dunedin, she was commissioned by the Government to make a survey of orphanages and special schools right throughout New Zealand, for it was fei't that she could bring to this country a very special experience and training in matters of social welfare. She acted as the women’s welfare secretary to the Dunedin Exhibition, and after that closed she accepted the. position of general secretary to the Auckland Y.W.C.A., which she held for four years. Miss Bcgg is now occupying the position of national secretary to the Y.W.C.A. of India, Burma and Ceylon, and has under her charge the whole of the work of the association in those three countries. She is now returning after a furlough in New Zealand and will go by way of Canada and the United Stales.
